Today:
High ceilings, spicy offerings and a kid-friendly vibe go a long way at Abuelo's, where classic Mexican dishes are served amid dark woods, classic architecture, dim lights and faux adobe walls.
99.9% of my dining out experiences in the last 8 years have been in family friendly places. Abuelo's has everyone covered. My picky husband enjoyed his enchillada trio. The enchilada sauses were tasty especially the red one. Both of our girls enjoyed the cheese quesadillas with fries. I had the chicken quesadilla appetizer and tortilla soup. The soup was pleasantly spicey with plenty of shredded chicken.
I have given this restaurant 3 tries... Maybe I am a snob, but as a native Texan, I have a certain level of expectaiton for "authentic" Mexican food. Chili's has a better Mexican menu than Abuelo's. The beans are often left under the heat lamp too long, the enchilladas are frequently prepared with stale tortillas, and the sauces leave much to be desired. Additionally, the service is consistently horrible. A friend's dish came out 10 minutes late, and then was incorrect...twice. The "servers" leave all of the service to support staff who check on tables infrequently since they are usually helping a majority of the restaurant. I will not return here again
I had lunch there yesterday and it was fantastic!!! My friend and I both had their soup and salad. I didn't want it because everything else looked so tasty but I'm on a diet, boooooo. But let me tell you, that was the best damn soup and salad I've ever had! I'm not a taco salad fan at all, it's never looked good to me, or even sounded good. But this one was amazing. It didn't have the taco shell bowl like most do. We didn't know what the sauce/dressing was and had to ask. Queso! It was very thin queso and it was awesome! You wouldn't think liquid cheese would be good as dressing for a salad but it was like heaven. It ruined the whole diet thing but hey, it was better than something deep fried. And I had the tortilla soup over the cream based pepper soup, so that helped too.
Also, I want to add, I have never been there before. The atmosphere was WOW. I walked in the door and said wow about 5 times before the hostess could get me to say anything to her. It's very beautiful!
This restaurant is a nice place... clean and spacious. We had decent service, nothing extraordinary. The food was average, with a few items a little more bland than I would hope for. The complimentary chips were too thin and fragile to handle the already watered-down salsa. And at the end, the bill was $75 for 4 dinners and a couple margaritas! I've had MUCH BETTER for less than 2/3 that price.
Abuelo's is one of those sell-my-soul-to-the-chain restaurants. I feel like the prices might have gone up a bit lately but I still really enjoy the food. The sangria is tasty, the salsa is wonderfully smoky-tasting, and I can't stay away from the avocado enchiladas.
Tried to stop in on Friday evening and there was a line outside the door. It seems like this place used to be a lot less busy. I guess the secret is out. The food is decent and fairly cheap and you can find coupons in the packs you get in the mail. They have good lunch and dinner specials if you're not the picky type. You can save a few bucks by having the special.
I really like dining here. I really like that they offer entrees that have a spanish flair but are not all covered in heavy sauces. It's a also a great place to meet our friends who have kids as its family friendly but yet not fast food!
This was a great restaurant for a more upscale Mexican joint. It has the feel of a fancy Don Pablo's and the price isn't too bad. They have very good Guacamole.
I honestly give up on this franchise - the only way it could have been worse is if I had gotten ill afterwards.
A little bit of everything
Abuelo's is one-of-a-kind in that it appeals to people that like "authentic" Mexican food as well as the fans of milder Taco Bell-ish cuisine. The atmosphere is really comfortable and the price tag for a family won't kill your pocketbook either.
