Udupi Cafe

4225 Lafayette Road, Indianapolis, IN, 46254
(317) 299-2127
(1 rating)

Northern Indian cuisine is the most common sub-continental fare available in the U.S. It's delicious and exotic for Midwestern tastes, but its heavy reliance on meat, starchy vegetables and grains make it the Asian equivalent of meat and potatoes. Southern Indian food is a bit lighter and utilizes a broader range of fruits and vegetables. Udupi Cafe is unique not just for the fact that they serve both Northern and Southern Indian dishes, but because they are currently the only vegetarian Indian restaurant in the city. Whether it's a paneer dish of curried cheese cubes or spiced lentils, anyone who is remotely adventurous will find something to enjoy.

Confession of a Sunday Night Buffet Addict

Anyone who enjoys the standard northern Indian cream-fest found at the wide variety of other Indiana restaurants, should definitely make their way to Udupi to try something a little different. Whether you go to their lunch or weekend-dinner buffets or dine in, the food is tasty, offers a wide variety of textures and flavors, and hits all parts of the palate.

Best bets at the buffet: soup with idli (the little white cakes in the warmer next to the soup), the chai, the chaat (a mix-it-yourself mini-buffet with puffed rice, chickpeas, lentil patties in yogurt, and assorted extras), the wonderful fried bread and stewed potato dish, and any of the many curries.

Best bets off the menu: the dosai, the dosai, the dosai. This Indian-style crepe, filled with a variety of delicious spicy veggie or cheese mixtures and served with a coconut sauce, are delightful.

Go for the food, not necessarily the atmosphere.
