Midwest classic
Steak n Shake is a Midwest and Hoosier staple. When I was a kid in Kokomo, this was pretty much the only place you could get a bit to eat after midnight besides Waffle House. I spent many hours at both.
Personally, I like the Frisco Melt, cheese fries, and a vanilla milkshake. The reason their shakes are so much better than other fast food places is that they use hand-dipped icecream instead of soft serve. There are actually quite a few places offering hand-dipped milkshakes these days but when I was younger it was kind of rare outside of the retro diners like Johnny Rockets.
By the way, if you're from another part of the country, Steak n Shake has similar food to Johnny Rockets only without the 50s theme and for about half the price. It's slighly more expensive than going to Burger King or something, but it's a sit down restaurant with waitresses and glass plates, so it's a little nicer than fast food. The burgers are kind of similar to what you might get at a Big Boy.
