Today:
"Cook good, serve generously, price modestly, people will come!" Indianapolis diners have been coming for Shapiro's Reubens since 1905. Owned and operated by the fourth generation of immigrant Shapiros, the spacious kosher cafeteria still bakes its own bread and quarters its own pickles daily. It's a massive operation; make up your mind quickly and don't take it personally if the counter workers keep barking "next."

The cakes in the picture look amazing. I have never liked the mac 'n' cheese there though. It never tastes right.
$15.00+ for a Rueben, a side of marinated mushrooms (obviously from a jar), and a fountain drink. If I am going to pay that much for lunch, then why would I want to stand in line cafateria style? Plus, the sandwich was cold when I finally did get to find a table (that was not cleaned in what appeard to be DAYS).
I don't see what all the fuss is about. Just being in business a long time or serving huge food does not mean you are the best. Bigger doesn't always been better.
How I wish I could still get a sandwich down the street at the old Cafe'@Ray.
IndyWino isn't lying. It will cost you that much to eat there. It's decent but not great. You don't even get that much food. The roast beef is like 40% fat.
I couldn't believe how much they were charging the last time I went. My mom wanted to go there for lunch and I think it ended up costing the two of us over $50. That's madness!!!!
Shapiros in an old school Indy tradition. I rememeber my mother taking me there for lunch when I was a child. It's a glorified MCL and I like it that way. I never finish my meal and I usually need a dolly to wheel my fat butt out of there when I am done. I will say the Lox is average but their desserts are super and their deviled eggs were killer!
The tapioca is wonderful. And I always get a double order of the mac and cheese. Comfort food. It is pricey, folks, but good.
My mom kept going on about the ESPN anchors talking endlessly about the sandwiches at Shapiro's while in town for the Big Ten championships. That's good enough for me.
If only I could afford it..
I would probably eat at the DT Shapiro's daily. I'd also probably die of a heart attack at 35. I love the atmosphere and the location, the food is very comforting and the desserts are magnificent.
Hail to the Sandwich!
