After a few pulls on a premium single-malt Scotch, you may feel like digging into haggis, a Scottish blood pudding made of lamb organs and vegetables. Keep drinking that single-malt Scotch and you might want to start fighting for the honor of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. But nobody likes to be Pict on, so calm down and enjoy the breeze rolling through the raised floor-to-ceiling windows.
The veggie sandwich here is great--a bit of spice and loaded with fresh ingredients. Another good sandwich choice: the grilled cheese. Enjoy one with a cold brew while people-watching on Mass Ave.
As in Young's Double Chocolate Stout! The best! And the coolest thing about this place, is that it's where my hubby and I went on our first date, and we fell in love while drinking Young's. I heart MacNiven's.
The owners of this spot hit a nitch right on the head with a shelaly! Best beer selections brew or bottled, attentive staff, clean inviting atmosphere, and great food from Scotland. Try the Scottish Eggs, and the burger!
Excellent choice of beers!! And many great vegetarian choices. Cool atmosphere and great service.
What more could you want?
I just love McNivens. Great place to fill in a nook on Mass Ave and it is just terrific. Their food is amazing, huge portions, their beer selection really is tops (I have spent time in Ireland and was surprised). We love to meet up with friends here and the staff never seem to mind when 'two more just showed up!' and push another table together or cram ourselves happily in.
If you haven't at least seen one of the cheeseburgers at MacNiven's you're missing out on something truly odd. They are thick as three sticks of gum and twice as wide as the bun they come on. They are also tasty.
The grilled cheese is one of the best in town, I know it's simple, but it's perfect. Their beer selection is good to boot, Young's Stout!
The Irish stew is good too and I remember the french dip being very good. Mmmm, makes me re-consider giving them only four stars.
I look forward to the summer and the front being open to the Avenue.
Great beer selection and a menu with items not found at many other places, make this a spot to remember. The atmosphere is relaxed, especially compared to some other Mass Ave destinations. If you're lucky, you may even be able to catch a game of soccer on TV while your sampling a cold one.
good place to chill and have a nice dinner afterwork with friends or co-workers. I would recommend to anyone who wants to try something new
a splendid place to catch some grub (be it a grilled cheese or perhaps a buffalo chicken sandwich) or just chill at a table and enjoy an amazing he'brew beverage... makes my heart happy.
That is all I need. The burger is great as well. I love the division of the resteraunt and bar. It is wonderful in the summer when the front is opened up and you can see the sites and hear the sounds. Great summer hang out.
I was a recovering Scottophile until I had the vegetarian haggis, Relapse! The veggie Haggis was great a but it was the nips and tatties that brought it to sublime excellence! Soon I was planning my own Burns Supper! (On that note I am surprised that they do not have an event for Burns Day. It is like Scottish St. Patrick's, but better.)
A Great Pick
MacNivens is one of my favorite lunch or after work stops. They have a great selection of imports, and some awesome food. Get the French Dip!
