Today:
Named for an ancient Incan religious site high in the Andes, Machu Picchu plates authentic Peruvian food. One thing you need to know in advance: This isn't Mexican food. Wash down a stewed lamb shank or sauteed beef with a bottle of Chicha Morada, a purple corn drink made with cinnamon and sugar, or an Inca Cola, which is said to taste like bubble gum. The waitstaff is patient and helpful with newcomers, and the sampler platter is a good way to familiarize yourself with the themes of Peruvian cooking.
For anyone who appreciates seafood, french fries, and/or eating adventures, Machu Picchu is a great dining choice. With a long menu, awesome aji sauce (the "green sauce" served with bread at the start of the meal), and lots of soup options, you can definitely try something new and delicious here. This place has heart, though it's probably not good for your heart with its preponderance of fried foods.
Best bets: Any dish involving fried root veggies. Seriously, Peruvians know their way around hot oil and starchy vegetables. The green sauce. Anything served on top of fries. My husband got the bistec al pobre (poor man's steak) and in addition to the beef, there was a fried egg, a fried plantain half, stewed beans, and hard-boiled egg, all on top of fries. Pretty awesome - and more than enough for a grown man to make it through 24 hours without eating again. But the star of the menu is the fried yuca - heavens to Betsy those are yummy.
Wooohoo, good and definately different
Yeaaah buddy, gimme a eight inch long deep fried potato ball with meat and raisins in the middle or a sauteed filet of fish covered in bits of octopus and squid.
While you're at it throw some incredibly spicy, yet tasty, green goo on a dish for me to dip my food and fresh bread in. (It's affectionately known by the staff as 'green sauce')
The food is as different as you can get without going African and eating with your fingers. It's also fun as can be. The staff are really excellent at explaining menu items and everything I ate was wonderful.
The decor is great and I'm pretty sure I saw one Apocalypto style sacrificial scene somewhere in there. If you're adventurous and into the exotic food, this is a killer place. The plantain thingies were well cooked too, which IMHO is rare.
PS - Apparently french fries with sauce are big in Peruvian Cuisine. They are tasty.
