Clean, friendly, laid back and inexpensive, this is Taffy's favorite Northside Mexican joint. The deck at La Piedad seats as many, if not more, than the enclosed dining area does, and the top-notch Mexican cuisine plated there means that, during warm months, both stay packed.

Delicious!

La Piedad came highly recommended by a Mexican-food loving friend and I am now happy to second the recommendation.

On a Friday night, La Piedad is a hoping place (though I imagine they do well all week long, lunch and dinner). The service is very prompt and if you're looking for a leisurely paced dining experience, this place is not for you; the drinks and chips and salsa are plonked on your table within two minutes of your arrival. Your food comes out, at most, ten minutes after you order it, if not sooner. (Unless I am on a romantic date with the Husband or catching up with someone I haven't seen in years, I always see this kind of speed as a positive).

Speedy service aside, La Piedad's decor is simple and unpretentious. There's no ambiance to speak of, but there's great people watching, and that's a perfect tradeoff if you ask me.

Now let me tell you about the food! The bottomless chips and salsa were great. My favorite chips are the ones that are on the thin side; nice and crispy. And my favorite salsa is the kind that has a nice bite to it, but doesn't make me sweat, is not too runny, not too chunky and has cilantro. La Piedad had me covered on both counts.

I am a big fan of Don Pablo's steak and shrimp fajitas. It's the seasoning that does it for me. I've experienced far too many bland fajitas in my life and so far, locally, I have not been able to find a restaurant to compete with The Don's fajitas. I am glad to say that now everything has changed! La Piedad's Chicken and Shrimp Fajitas was a wonderful surprise. I loved how the chicken wasn't in strips and looking all TV-dinner-rubberish. I don't know what exactly they do to it - it could have been pulled, but in thick chunks if that makes any sense. And these chicken chunks were mixed in with shrimp, green peppers and onions in a most satisfying manner. The dish came with the usual sides, beans, rice and the trimmings including delicious guacamole. Guac so tasty in fact that I had to ask for an another dish of it.

The Husband decided to try several things a la carte. (He was rather skeptical about dining at La Piedad. Apparently, his negative experiences with other "authentic" Mexican eateries rival mine). He ordered a Chile Rilenos, a chicken tamale, a beef taco and a cheese tostada - incredibly he gave the thumbs up to all four items. If you knew the Husband, you could more fully appreciate how absolutely amazing this was. I took his comments as an opportunity to squeeze in an "I told you so".

Our friends, who were eating out with us, ordered a chile relenos dinner and nachos and both polished off their plates, stating that they would definitely be back.

So there you have it! Four people dining at the same restaurant and not a single complaint. I didn't realize that this was even possible. :-)

All that to say that La Piedad is definitely worth a look if you enjoy Mexican food that is well seasoned and delicious. I had read a comment by someone stating that they didn't think that La Piedad's cuisine was authentic in the least. That may or may not be true, but who cares!! Their stuff tastes great!

My favorite mexican place!

I love la piedad!! My favorite time to go is during the warmer months, because they have a really nice little poarch with a view of the monon. The food is always good and consistantly tasty. The prices aren't too shabby either. And the service has always been prompt and friendly.

Cheap Eats

I am lucky enough to work within walking distance of this great restaraunt. The speedy gonzales with rice and chicken in the taco instead of beef is the way to go if you are on the cheap. Other than that why not enjoy their wonderful burrito La Piedad.

One downside is no margaritas - but they do have beer.

yummm

This place rocked. It was recommended by a friend, and yes, it lived up to my standards - since they are very high when it comes to Mexican food. The salsa was great - and the food was faster than speedy gonzalez... so yeah I got the Fajita Quesadilla with shrimp and it was very tasty and semi-cheap, so it was a great all around experience.

Almost perfect!

There are so many little Mexican restaurants in town, and most of them are horrible! La Piedad is an exception. The patio is great! It's so hard to find patio seating that isn't on a busy street.

Doin' it right

No doubt one of the better Mexican dining venues in my experience. The salsa is spot on and the service has been flawless for sure. Be sure to ask for the hot sauce. There is nothing shelf about it. The freshest, tastiest and mixture since Mrs. Renfro shook hands with a tomato.
