Today:
The L.S. Ayres Tea Room served soup, salad and sandwiches to white-gloved ladies for 85 years before the company's flagship Downtown store closed in 1990. Twelve years later the Indiana State Museum reproduced and reopened the Tearoom so Hoosiers could visit the past without a Delorean. The formal decor doesn't dictate a dress code, but it might be fun to wear your Sunday best.
Pretty much the same review. I remembered the place as I was a little girl. My grandma always took us to the tea room at xmas time and I was very little when they closed it. So it was HUGE to me in my memories. When I walked into the one at the museum I was disappointed at the size to start. And then the food was terrible. Hard bread, bland food, just blah. It was fun to say I've done it, ONCE, but I don't want to do it again.
took my grandma and mom here..
Over Christmas time, thought it would be so magical. I remember hearing stories of how when my Grandma was a single mom on special occasions she would take my mom and her sister to the Ayres Tea Room, and how fancy and special it was...
I was pretty disappointed to say the least. The bread and croissants were stale, the famous Chicken Velvet Soup was over salted...
It is a shame that there is not more pride put into running a recreated version of an Indiana historical landmark.
