Located on the southern edge of historic Lockerbie, Amici's is off the main Downtown entertainment thoroughfares but not far enough off to miss. Faux-aged walls surround a small main dining room, and even more intimate seating can be found upstairs. Slightly more expensive than casual dining, Amici's food and atmosphere make it a worthwhile addition to the regular repertoire.
The eclectic atmosphere was misplaced by the smell that just was not right. As we entered I told my wife that the food would either be great or just plain bad. Once we sat down we were served bread that was black on top and the odor within the place was not appetizing at all. After we ordered (the lasagna and a penne pasta) we were served a salad that was dripping in balsamic and was covered in powdered cheese (Not even fresh but powdered) we took two bites and were done. Then the main course was dropped off and it took me one second to send the lasagna back to the kitchen (it was stone cold) I advised the serve that I would not eat this and she agreed. As for the penne let's just say it made its way to the dumpster out back. Then came the bill, I could not believe that they tried to charge me for the main course that was sent back cold that I did not touch. DO NOT GO HERE unless you like very poor food for a very outrageous price
Unlike JSMoore, I had a fantastic experience every time we have visited. I can understand that a place can have an off evening, but was never at Amici's. The food is delightful and fresh, with a quirky neighborhood feel. When in the northeast part of downtown pay this wonderful eatery a visit soon.
Sooo after first seeing Amicis about 8 years ago, I finally made it there for dinner. Which I had always heard really good things about this place, which if by good food...they meant really cool atmosphere with lots of art work, then my expectations were met. However, I really think they meant the food, which I then don't have any idea what the hell they were talking about...because the food I ordered...Chix Parmasean...was just basic fare with a poor breading, cold red sauce, a so so salad, and cold noodles...and all this cost me including the 1 beer and tip...close to 30 bucks. I wasn't impressed AT ALL. Good luck with that...I think I still have a $30 gift card for Olive Garden left over from Christmas. I could've gone corporate damn it! Maybe you jsut go for the calzones or something?
The decor is one of a kind for this area. The food is usually good but not spectacular. I view it as a nice place to have a very casual and unpretentious meal without sacrificing too much quality. As mentioned in another review, the jukebox is great. Watching peoples' faces as "Ring of Fire" starts up during their dinner is great.
Atmosphere worth the trip
Amici's has a decent menu, but the real reason to go is the eclectic atmosphere, complete with jukebox (which, btw, could probably use some updating). The place feels easy-going, neighborhood-ish and romantic (but not in the marriage-proposal kind of way) -- all at the same time.
The menu is loaded with cold-day comfort foods ... one of my favorites is the three-cheese calzone, although make use of a side of marinara to give it some additional zest.
