Today:
Would you like some breakfast with your beer? The Alley Cat opens at 7 a.m., so it doesn't matter whether you're just waking up or winding down. The recent renovation and reputation as a dive non pareil is drawing more Chets of the main drag, but the Cat is still home to Northside bohos.
If I feel like going out, but not shaving and being fine in a t-shirt that has a Ukrainian pork festival add on it, I'm comfy enough at the Cat.
It's changed a lot over the years and isn't as grungy as it used to be after the re-model, I suppose that might be good. I'd kind of like a few holes in the walls though. This is a plastic cup bar and it's packed solid on the weekends, especially if there's live music.
Two bad things about the place. There's only one potty for each sex and there's normally a ten foot line. Second I've been burned by cigarettes at least twice in this place, the quarters are cramped. I now carry a large cigar I wield like sword.
If you're feeling anti-Izod give it whirl.
the alley cat has gone through some major, MAJOR changes in the last few years. its still a crappy dive bar with all of the charm one could divulge from strong drinks and a clusterf**k of patrons. its impossible to navigate, the drinks are strong, and its always loud as hell. its a great place to get drunk, and when i say drunk, i mean like youre not going to remember that $5 of songs you put on the jukebox (which used to be the best in town.)
go if only to gawk. go if you think broad ripple is only rich white dudes with popped collars. go if you want to get drunk. go and play pool and hold that pee.
stay for the steak.
I remember around 2002 when it was still a dive before they revamped it 2006. I liked it better then.
It has been a while... tucked away in yes-an alley, this was a dive worth diving for. Memory recalls cool bar-keeps. Decent pool action and palatable bar-feed. I hear of major changes...stay posted.
I have been to many bars in many states but nothing is like going back to the alley cat. You know that your boy Mike Tully will be behind that bar waiting to open up an ice cold CAN of bud light rady to pour that next shot but make sure you bring cash b/c thats all they take. If that the only bad thing about this bar it must be pretty great. (oh yea and the gyros place which is right next door is great after you stumbel out at 2am)
Yea i was there at 7am my homecoming years for Butler, but man the place is a dive bar. Its got cheap beer and lots of pool. With your buddies it makes for a good time.
The Alley Cat is cool because it's a hole. this place is not fancy, cust, clean or healthy and thats why people love it. It's small, dank, cramped and loud. coming here is a true experiernce.
The Alley Cat is an unmistakable misfit even in the famously eclectic Broad Ripple. This establishment throws a finger to the general mentality of our aesthetics obsessed society. Yeah, they remodeled a bit only to keep the heath dept. from closing the place. If you are assuming they wanted to make the experience visually appealing to the patrons think again. The Alley Cat is one of the few remaining stainless steel fixtures where nothing is hidden and the simple, lets get f----- up attitude is preferable to many plastic, flexible, posh pubs/clubs which host the best fallacy Indy has to offer.
"Triple shot of Crown straight up".
God this place is trashy . . . and I love it that way
I think the Cat, aka The S---ty Kitty, is one of those places you love or hate. You get it or you don't. It's kind of a crappy hole in the wall, but not. It's kind of the borderline alterna-indie-musical-artistic types hangout, but in a snobbish way. As great as the ultra lounges are for people watching, the Cat might rival it. But for completely different reasons and the utter opposite clientele. Still, the drinks are cheap, the bartenders are great (B-Rad always hooks it up - fast and efficient - two buttery crowns and a Coke, $11), and you never know who you'll see. The bands that play the Vogue often stop by after gigs and it's sort of a social catch-all. I like to go when I'm dressed up and people look at me like I don't belong. Just adds to the fun.
