New York style Hole in the wall that host some of the best live music available in Indianapolis. We are a bit bias since he hit it Saturdays...
I can't say enough about the Mel, as it is affectionately called by the frequenting clientèle. It's a great place for many things. A good place for a date, a nice place to meet interesting people, and a fine place for a reasonably priced, stiff drink!
But most importantly (to me) - THIS IS WHERE THE MUSIC IS AT!
I don't think there's any venue in town that can compare in variety of musical acts offered. They literally host shows of just about every style of music under the sun. Sure, they're known for their metal, punk rock and indie rock shows, but they have it all: lounge, gothic/industrial, electronica, jazz, blues, country, ska... whew, I'm running out of breath here. The point is, no matter what type of music you are into, you'll find it here at least occasionally.
And contrary to what some people think, this dive bar with an unusual stage location, actually does sound pretty good. However, it does help when there are plenty of people in the place, absorbing all the wall and floor sound reflections.
Oh... and as Neal points out, Dave and Rob are awesome dudes!
OUT OF TOWNERS: I highly recommend visiting this unique, Indy bar!
Rock on Mel!
if you're not worried about atmosphere and seating and you can handle smoke then the Melody Inn is the bomb. the best prices on drinks in town and some of the best bands across the country. their standard is punk but i've seen a wide array of great music there. it's small but the sounds kicks butt. the PBR comeback has been done time and time again but I get the feeling this place started it all.
Indy's #1 patron of eclectic musical art. Fantastic staff. Bands cut their teeth here in the midst of the party atmosphere. I found good friends through the flying rock. I love this place.
Taffy *hearts* the Mel
Dave and Rob treat everybody well and the bar hosts crucial shows week in and week out. I have watched and played so many shows here, and I even bounced someone while my band played!
