Today:
It's not the fanciest joint in the city, but the Chatterbox Jazz Club does what it knows best: "talk, drinks, jazz." Down the street from the Murat, the Chatterbox is a favorite after-theater destination, and it plays host to some great local (and not-so-local) jazz musicians. Live music is featured every night, and special non-smoking early shows are held on weekend nights.

To say this place is awesome is an understatement! I've been going there for years. Even though I wouldn't consider myself one of the regulars anymore (since I've become a mom--lack of time), if I have a free night, that's where I would go. Great staff (that remember your drinks), amazing atmosphere, good music--it's just comfy and cool. make sure to check out the bathrooms--it's an art in itself (years of recorded history. i still crack myself up when i see one of my quotes from 10+ years ago). oh, and I have to say...that's where I met my hubby!
hands down, the BEST
ok, yea. its tiny. yea, the bathroom is scary. sure, its packed.
but you will not have a better evening in the city of Indianapolis, you will not have lead a complete LIFE in Indianapolis until you spend a long night at the Box.
hot jazz, cool jazz, avant jazz, boring jazz, traditional and contemporary genius; its all from that teeny tiny stage by the front window. everyone stops by, everyone looks at the walls and wonders if they can still find that quote they threw up five years ago.
you may want to go for the wines - whoever is working will find your perfect glass amidst the 30+ bottles waiting for you to drink them. maybe you want a Cosmo? get one, theyre delish! draft beer? you got 'em (ok, only three, but yum!)
a word of warning to the penny pinchers - once the music starts everything you order goes up twenty-five cents. but unless you hate music, you shouldnt mind. if you hate music you shouldnt even go.
do yourself a favor; get a ride down there soon, enjoy yourself, and fall in love with one of Indy's true gems.
