St. Elmo Steak House

127 S. Illinois St., Indianapolis, IN, 46225

Vintage high-end chop-house decor and atmosphere has been maintained through subsequent renovations and expansions and this historic Indy eatery. The menu is simple and classic; the bar is, too. The cocktail sauce is widely regarded the best in the city, and the steaks are nothing to sniff at, either.

Too hot to handle?

I highly recommend you try St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail. It's nearly too hot (think extreme horseradish) to endure while chewing the shrimp, but something about it begs you to keep sticking your cocktail fork into the fire. The lobster wasn't too bad either, but after the bold flavor of the shrimp cocktail, it was no match.

That said, the atmosphere was very relaxing and it was a great place to spend sipping wine and reconnecting with family.

Perfect date night...

We love St. Elmo's and everything is has to offer. Whether we are there for our "date night" or getting together with family and friends, a few things are certain. The food is excellent and the service is impeccable. For us, nothing compares to enjoying a great meal and great wine. And I completely agree with Amber...the shrimp cocktail is one of a kind!

Not Impressed

After hearing so much about this establishment my wife and I were really expecting an A+ meal. Instead what we received was no less than an average Steak in an overcrowded environment. As for the Shrimp Cocktail I must say that I know of five other area establishments that entertain such a cocktail that is either better or comparable at less price. For a one time event this was fine as to ever going again I can honestly say "No thank You". In a nut shell over rated and over priced for what you get.

Not For Me

If you enjoy dining elbow to elbow with a bunch of Frat boys, this is the place to go. It's obviously THE place the men go to strike a deal with a new client. From where I sat, I did not see seating condusive to that quiet romantic evening. Food tasted good but for the price I would not return. Go for it boys.

Way to expensive for what it is

So i go to try the shrimp cocktail and wow was I disappointed. It was possibly the worst tasting thing ive ever had and 20 bucks for a couple shrimp. At least the stake was good, but it doesnt look like a place where I would want to have a special date. Think something different, but if you wanna have a good time with friends or family from out of town then maybe this is the place for you.

Classic Steakhouse

This place is an Indy icon for a reason. Great steaks, incredible shrimp cocktail and an atmosphere you'd expect from the nicest places in town. Service is top-notch and the prices, although expensive, are in line with other similar restaurants. If you have to worry about the cost of a particular meal, don't go here. Try Ponderosa instead. If you want the best meal at any cost, this place is sure to satisfy.

Spicy shrimp coctail of goodness

If you love horseradish this is your Mecca - the shrimp cocktail is really all I ever need to get here but I hear the steaks are good too.

Worst dinner I have ever had

My husband and I went with 3 other couples to celebrate a birthday. I was not impressed. I sent my meal back for another one of my choice and was charged for the new meal. The waiter said he would replace it...that means to me that I would pay for the first meal, not $10.00 more. My husand had to send his meal back and didn't even eat. The other 3 couples had a hard time with the bad food and bad service. For $448.00 for all of us, I think the food and the service was terrible. I've been to nicer places for less and felt I got my money's worth. St. Elmo must just have the name but as far as anything else, it doesn't come up to par. In fact, the waiter got a $80.00 tip (automatically included because of the size of our party) and we only seen him once. Wow, what a rip off. Will never go to St. Elmo's again.

Virgin to St. Elmo's

I chose to take advantage of Indy's restaurant week and went to St. Elmo's last night on a double date with my guy and two friends. I've never eaten at St. Elmo's before and heard only great things about it. I must agree with any positive thing anyone has every uttered about this place. We all got the world famous shrimp cocktail (which is fiery hot...but absolutely fabulous), "petite" filet mignon (which was really about an 8oz...way larger than I expected), and cheesecake for dessert. Typically this would run a couple approximately $150 w/ drinks...we got it for $60 per couple (not including our wine and beer)!! Our service was great and the steaks were all cooked to perfection. Everyone should treat themselves to a great dinner at this restaurant at some point.

Enjoy!!!

Loved it!

We dined here to celebrate our anniversary during devour downtown.

Not only did we get an exceptional meal with fabulous service, we got it at a great price. We will be back to pay full price in the near future!

The BLT salad was phenomenal, The filet perfect, and the service exceptional.. oh and the shrimp cocktail was perfectly fiery.

Be sure to say hi, to Duck the bartender. We used to visit him at the Front Page and he has been at St. E's now for 4 years. Our server, David, had been there 22 years and was the best server I have ever had. period.

Forget the chains, check out an Indy classic

Old world charm

This place has its good points - typically good but distant service, great pieces of meat, and old world ambiance. If you're looking for a friendly progressive place to hang out. This is definitely not it. It is an institution and that's the reason to go. To say you've been. I agree on the shrimp cocktail. It needs work - I'd round the flavors out to be a little more than just horseradish overload. All in all - I'm all for paying for quality - and if you haven't been - you should check it out!
