If you can't pronounce it you'll still probably like it so order the unknown, enjoy old favorites and completely immerse yourself in quality Japanese cuisine at Yokohama, located in Greenwood's historic Old Town.
I was happily surprised to discover that the Southside now has an excellent Japanese/Sushi restaurant. Yokohama is truly an outstanding restaurant and surpasses all of the sushi places I have tried in the greater Indianapolis area (Kabuto, House of Tokyo, Sakura, Sushi on the Rocks, etc). I grew up on sushi in the Northwest with excellent restaurants serving this cuisine. Yokohama is in league with many of the restaurants in Seattle and Portland that I love.
We started with broiled Tuna cheek (fantastic!) and edamame. Also had the Dragon Fire roll, Spicy Salmon roll, and a broad selection of sushi and sashimi. We finished with the Mochi (one red bean and one mango). The food arrived quickly and with excellent preparation and presentation. The sushi/sashimi was outstanding, everything was extremely fresh and tasty. The two rolls were the best I have had in a long time (certainly the best I've ever had in the midwest). The service was outstanding. Also tried their Poochi Poochi (sparkling sake) which was quite nice. We'll be back soon and often. Truly a much needed addition to the Southside as well and the greater Indianapolis area.
Thanks for coming to Greenwood Yokohama!
From the old part of town in Greenwood on Main St, go North on Madison and its up about 3/4 mile on the right. Next to the britely colored furtune-teller house! I started working down the street in late May and was happy to see a new Sushi bar open. I have been there about 10 times since and having been to probably all the sushi bars in town I would have to say this is as good or better than all. Very nice decor, and friendly service. Watch out for the owner/hostess, she's a hoot! Great selection. Beautiful presentation. Maybe a tiny bit high on sushi lunch special but worth it. You get soup, salad and several sushi/sushimi combo's to choose from for 10-12 bucks. Of corse you can order ala cart. They have other stuff for cheaper but I'm hooked on sushi. If I ever get my fill of the sushi/sushimi I may try something else, I just cant resist, it's so fresh and perfectly prepared. Highly recommend.
I typically don't write reviews on websites to complain about inconvenient experiences I've had with businesses who've done me wrong as a consumer, but being at this restaurant compelled me to write a bad review. Let me ask you this: How would you feel if you got the cops called on you by the owner for not wanting to pay full price for such horrible service?
Me and my party were seated on the upper level of the restaurant since the first floor was full. We had to take off our shoes before entering the 2nd floor, though. It took them forever to wait on us. A couple of times they admitted that we were forgotton. (I don't eat sushi, so I had their fish.)So by the time our entree's came, they were extremely cold. In between waiting I had to go to the bathroom a couple of times. I'm very observant, so I noticed that the bathroom and the entire upper area was used as living quarters as well as it being used to serve customers -RAW FOOD. So already, that had turned me off.
The owner assisted the newly hired waiter in serving us. I noticed she wasn't wearing shoes, and her feet appeared to be very unclean. I was able to get a profile of her feet because the seats were elevated like traditional style Japanese tables (I don't know what they're called).
Before checking out, I complained to the owner that I did not approve of the service my guests and I received. And to top it off she was wearing my guest's shoes to serve people! (Remember we had to take off our shoes at the steps). We figured our shoes weren't going to be tampered with. The owner claimed that it was a mistake but my guest's shoes looked nothing like the owner's. Me and my guest weren't satisfied with the 10% off she was offering, so she accused us of being cheap. We were being insulted and embarrassed because we didn't agree with the amount she was taking off.
To make a long review short, the cops came, made us pay and the horrible BI*#! of an owner was vindicated. I beg whoever who reads this review to not endorse that place. They have no regard for customers - their health and patronage. If you do decide to eat there, eat at your own risk.
Ha ha to the last 4 reviews. Obviously someone has quite a bit of free time. Here's an idea. 1)Leave if the place doesn't satisfy your sanitation requirements. 2)If you choose to stay and actually eat, pay your bill and never go back. Spamming a review thread is not persuasive nor productive.
Three posts were removed because they appeared to be created for the express purpose of skewing the perception of this restaurant. If you feel the need to write a negative review, write it once.
I'm kinda surprised that this restaurant is getting negative spams, there must be other rival sushi joints out there that are trying to give the place a bad name.I ate there with several friends several months ago, and we had a very nice time. The restaurant is located in an old, remodeled arts and crafts style four-square house, near the old downtown in Greenwood. The decor is very fitting for a Japanese restaurant, and they've managed to create a very peaceful, comfortable environment. The sushi was tasty, fresh, and well presented. I was looking at the reviews here today, because I was looking up the address to go visit it again tonight. Don't miss this place because of a few sour grapes out there. Quite frankly, the one negative review that was left sounds like it was made up. Well, that's my two cents worth.
Excellent Japanese in Greenwood
Went to Yokohama for the first time in June 2008 (I believe they just opened within the past month). In a word - Amazing. The style and atmosphere is the best of the Japanese places I have tried in the area (Kabuto, House of Tokyo, Sushi on the Rocks are some of the other places I've tried). It's not really a Hibachi-style place - they tend to have regular Japanese entrees along with Sushi.
The service we received was quite good; the food was even better. Had a Clam Miso Soup, Spring rolls (appetizer), and Sushi. The Clam Miso Soup was a nice take on regular Miso Soup, and the Spring rolls were delicious. Their Salmon Tar Tar sushi roll is probably the best individual sushi roll I've ever had (lots of salmon meat in the roll and very fresh). Also had the Spicy Tuna roll, which was also delicious.
Our party split some Green Tea ice cream and Red Bean Mochi ice cream, which was delicious as well. All in all, it was probably the best overall Japanese-themed restaurant I've been to. I will definitely return.
