Today:
Irvington's newest hot spot, Jockamo serves upper crust pies to a seemingly endless stream of East side residents. The dining rooms are simple and spacious, the design is elegant and unobtrusive, and the wait staff is enthusiastic.
I went to Jockamo w/ my husband for the first time last night. My husband works just down the street, so he has been there several times before, but I finally made my way in there, too. I'm not a big pizza fan, so I wasn't in any hurry to try it. I honestly did not expect it to be so...nice. The atmosphere was just right for the Irvington community; they even have photographs of around town by local photographers & a section of their menu dedicated to the other food-related shops/restaurants in Irvington. The food was fantastic. I ordered the Health Nut salad which was a blend of broccoli florets, diced red onion, cucumber, tomatoes, & pine nuts in a garlic dressing. My husband ordered a house salad. We also ordered a Luau pizza, which is ham, bacon, red onion, bell pepper, cheese, & barbecue sauce instead of pizza sauce. Some of the best pizza I've ever eaten! The crust is crispy on the bottom & chewy on top...perfect, in my opinion. While we ordered a 12", they accidentally made us a 10" by mistake. To fix it, they made another 10" for us at no charge! The service was great & it was just an all-around good experience. My only complaint is that it was rainy, damp and cold outside, yet they seemed to have the air conditioner on inside! I was pretty cold for most of my visit. But I will definately return!
I ordered carry out from this place. I thought that the sauce and the overall flavor was bland. The crust tasted like a parbake. I had poor customer service when I went to pick up my pizza so the owners gave me a coupon for a free pizza. I didn't take them up on it. I won't get pizza from here again. Honestly, I would prefer a frozen Jack's pepperoni and mushroom.
I think so. Jockamo's is the newest restraunt in Irvington, and a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I was impressed with the restraunt on a whole. I went into Jockamo's with my wife and some friends. We were seated promptly (even though they were relatively busy), and waited on efficiently. The pizza was amazing, I had a Slaughterhouse Five, I don't recall what the others in the party had, but we all enjoyed it. The breadsticks were great. The interior and ambiance are both similar to what you would find at Bazbeaux, and the menu had some similiarities as well. I though the crust and toppings were of a higher quality than what I've had at Bazbeaux in the past. Definitely would recommend Jockamo's.
This first-timer tried the Slaughterhouse Five pizza. I was impressed that the five meats--pepperoni, ham, bacon, sausage and Italian beef--complemented rather than competed with each other. The crust was a little doughy, but I liked it that way.
The wait for the order was not long, The only complaint is that the server failed to come back to ask abouts drinks, etc., but as I understand it, it was an untypically busy night because of a special community event.
Yes, this place is new and they appear to be working on service quality. My husband and I have been in for pizza three times now. The first time we had pretty good service and the food was great. The second time the staff did not have a clue but again, food was good. Well, last Friday evening the server was phenominal! Joe was our server and he promptly took our drink order, provided us with an excellent pizza, and refilled our glasses before we had to ask. Way to go Joe for providing excellent customer service!!!! Thanks for a wonderful meal.
In the not-so-distant past, Indianapolis' Eastside wasn't even on the radar of gourmet-pie purveyors who passed over the area in favor of trendier Mass Ave., ...
As an Irv. resident, I was so excited about Jockamo. We ordered a to-go pizza last Friday evening. The atmosphere is great, the service is really good. The beer and wine list is impressive for a neighborhood pizza joint. We ordered a 'custom' pie with cajun sausage, fontina cheese, mushrooms, grilled chicken, and red onions. The crust was overcooked and pretty flavorless. The sauce did NOT have the 'kick' advertised on the menu. The grilled chicken, although juicy, was flavorless and the mushrooms were dry. I did enjoy the Health Nut salad and the homemade gorgonzola dressing was great, but the pizza wasn't as good as pizzas I make at home and it certainly wasn't worth the thirty dollars it cost us!! Since we are Irvingtonites, we will try again but this time we will steer clear of the tomato sauce and maybe try the Chicken Pesto specialty pizza with LOTS of added garlic and basil just to be safe.
We felt that we needed to reply to an inaccurate blog that was posted about our restaurant.
Our floors are a distressed, stained concrete that are swept and mopped nightly and have a professional cleaning monthly which is much more than most restaurants.
It is so disappointing when someone doesn't take the time to discuss their concerns directly w/the management/owners, but instead blogs negatively and inaccurately. We have invested a lot of money, time and passion to provide something to a community and area that we care a lot about and that has been terribly underserved.
The Jockamo Owners
I ordered a small pizza for carry-out. I got home, and found out it was undercooked. I tried a few bites, and decided to throw it in the oven for about 5 more minutes. After it came out, it tasted alot better, but it didn't knock my socks off -- it was overall just plain bland. Nothing special about this pizza at all... but it wasn't horrible (like HOT BOX PIZZA, for instance). Definitley not as good as the incredibly overrated Bazbeaux's, and a far cry from Indy's "pizza king," WB PIZZA. Friendly service and nice atmosphere though, and seems like a good place to take the family.
We also live nearby, and have tried Jockamo's twice. It appears that the wait staff is either inexperienced or is of poor quality (young kids who don't care). During one visit, one of the young female waiters stood next to a wall-side table and engaged in a long conversation with the diners (appeared she knew them); however, her backside was practically in my wife's face the whole time (we were sitting at the next table), which was uncomfortable to say the least. She needs to be taught to sit down if she's going to do that. We also have experienced lack of follow-up (refilling water glasses, asking how we're doing, etc.). I think training, or getting rid of the "dead wood" servers, is needed. We've also experienced not getting our pizza as ordered; either wrong or missing toppings. And fyi, we recently heard very similar comments from another Irvington couple who have tried this establishment three times. They've given up on Jockamo's, but I hope the restaurant can work through these issues, as they're a great and needed addition to the neighborhood. Overall, the atmosphere is generally festive (can be pretty loud at times), and reinforces the neighborhood friendliness - a place to gather - similar to the Lazy Daze coffee house nearby.
I have been there a couple of time this cold December month. I have to stay I do like the interior of the place but I wish that it had more topping to offer like Bazbeaux. Avacados??
I'll be sure to be there this weekend. :D
Very, very good pizza; worthy to be considered among the city's best. The Parmesan garlic sauce for the breadsticks is borderline sinful. Also, Jockamos has one of the best lunch deals in town.
Definitely will return and have no hesitation recommending the restaurant.
Had it tonight via delivery. It's just like the quattro formaggio at Bazbeaux, except it's 5 times better and I don't have to sub anything for the mushrooms (blech).
It's outfreakinstanding. That is all.
So far, I've tried about a half dozen pizza's here and my top three faves (in no particular order) are the Cheese Louise, Slaughterhouse Five, and the Luau
We waited a LONG time for this place to open after a couple of years of hearing 'Irvington might be getting a pizza joint' ~ and we're thrilled with what the owners of Jockamo have brought to us! My husband and I, as well as our next door neighbors, have tried many of the specialty pizzas, a few sandwiches, salads and breadsticks and I can honestly say we have never been disappointed. I love thin crust pizza and theirs has always been consistently good. The tomato/marinara sauce is TO DIE FOR (I confess to ordering a side just to take home for later). It would be hard to choose a favorite pizza but I would have to say the Puttanesca inches out the Shrimp Scampi ~ but barely. So many pizzas ~ so little time.... (sigh)
Their pizza is the $h$#! Locally owned and operated in the heart of my childhood neighborhood. Their pizza blows the face off Bazbeaux or anyone else in this town. Unfortunately they don't deliver to my house but I am lucky enough that they deliver to my work! I wish them nothing but the utmost success and success to everyone involved in the revitalization of Irvington. It's a beautiful community that keeps getting over looked by the local government.
Try the Fromage, Extra mega, super tons of cheese pizza or whatever its called! So dank!
Jockamo, you kick some mega pizza ass!
It's almost unamerican to say it, but I don't usually like pizza at all. I was even a delivery girl for Papa Johns, could have had free pizza all the time, and I never did b/c I just didn't like it.
I live in Irvington and am so happy to have Jockamo's as part of our community now. I've been there 6 times, and loved it every time. You should definitely check it out. I'm really looking forward to our next visit. The Chicken Pesto is my favorite. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is because our service hasn't always been great.
I know there are already 21 reviews for this place but I want to add one more. We just ate at Jockamo for the 2nd time and again had great food and a great dining experience. We started by ordering house salads with their homemade dressings - the dressings are excellent. The house salad for $2.95 is a large plate of fresh salad ingredients: a mixture of greens with lots of various diced veggies. We were having difficulty deciding on which pizza to order and our server (bless him) informed us that we could order a 1/2 & 1/2 at no extra charge. We ordered the grilled eggplant w/extra sauce on 1/2 and the 4-cheese pizza w/ bacon on the other 1/2. Both were outstanding. The 1st time that we went to Jockamos we went with several friends and ordered 4 different pizzas which were all tremendous. This place really knows their pizza. The atmosphere is very casual and definitely family friendly. Plus, they have a lot of great microbrew & import beer in bottles. They also carry wine but I didn't check-out the list though several adults were ordering glasses. The service is very friendly & efficient and our food was delivered quickly. This place is highly recommended.
I have been there for small get togeathers, Large birthday parties and just lunch for 2 and never had a problem with service, staff, order or tips. It seems to me that this pizza place has a great recipe for success. I was in my yard and I am so close, that I heard the Fire department order from there several times. If you can please those guys several times, you are doing something right!!!!
Had Take Out
I was visiting a friend in Irvington, and we got some pizza from here. The crust was crunchy and flavorful. The toppings were just right.
I will have to try this place again when I am on the eastside.
