Today:
Pick up dinner for the whole crew at this realatively new 'cue counter.
I went here for the first time recently after driving by it frequently for quite awhile now. It's one of those establishments where you see it, think to yourself "those hole-in-the-wall places are usually pretty good", and then keep driving. It literally is a hole in the wall, comprised of a food prep area, a counter to order at, and a menu on the aforementioned wall.
After debating to go with the pulled pork sandwich or the rib dinner, I went with the ribs based on the server's personal preference. Comprised of about 1/3 of a rack of ribs, cole slaw, and potato salad as well as a diet soda (of course), the total was still under $8.
The rib meat was smoked perfectly with a nice dry rub. Too often rubs try to do too much, this one was a just-right compliment to the flavor of the meat. I was given a choice of hot or mild sauce and without hesitation went for the hot. Mild sauces tend to be too sweet for me and just cover up flaws of the cooking. Hot sauces will generally accent the meat and this one did just that. One of the more peppery sauce I've had, I quickly became a big fan of it. It eventually found its way to coating the potato salad.
The sides bear mentioning. The potato salad was good, but not great. I didn't really became happy with it until I decided to pour the remaining sauce over it. The cole slaw was a different story. Vinegar-based instead of mayo, it was a great side for barbeque. Just thinking of it now puts a smile on my face (I have issues with food, if you haven't noticed). The server tried his best to talk me into the baked beans, but nope. I'm not a bean fan. Maybe next time, instead of the potato salad.
All in all, the quantity and quality of food is definitely worth the money. Well, as long as the sauce stains on my shirt wash out.
After passing this place so many times and not knowing it was even there, I finally stopped in to see how good the que really was...I was not disappointed! The rib meat was falling off the bones and the flavor of the rub was exquisite! The cole slaw really hooked me, I have never had a slaw that was so refreshing from first bite to last. Even though it was vinegar based, the flavor was delicate and not overpowering. I thought it was a tremendous value. I ordered two rib dinners and threw in a pound of rib tips and the total was only $20.00!! That included the sides which were excellent with the ribs. The rib tips were also among the best I have had in Indy, not a hard piece of meat among them. The tip meat was also falling off of the bones. All in all, I am glad I tried this place and it has already become my favorite place for ribs!! Give it a try and you won't be disappointed!! And the sauce...a perfect match with the dry rub!!!
