Today:
The smell of smoked meat and spices waft throughout the converted-residence interior of Hoghead's. It's almost enough to make you want to stay indoors when the weather is nice, but the deck is too inviting to resist.
The first time I went to Hogheads BBQ I was headed to a different restaurant, but the fantastic smoky smell from down the block made me change my mind. The meat is fantastically smoky and tender, and the cheesy potatoes were great. They have several barbecue sauces, but the meat moist and flavorful on its own. They have a few family style meals that are a great value.
Okay I've said it before. I'm from Texas, and I am a BBQ Nazi... So sue me.
But all in all this is the best that I have found in this city...so far.
The parking isn't the best, (my friend and I had to park 2 blocks from the place), but the walk was worth it.
The place is clean, (although small), and the staff is friendly. The food is good. I ordered the 2 meat sampler of brisket and pulled pork and ordered the sausage to go. The beans and cole slaw.
Friend orders the brisket, fried apples, and coleslaw.
The meats are the main items. I found the brisket and pork to be good, although the sausages didn't seem to have any real HBQ flavor to them. Each table has three sauces, Original, Hot and Spicy Mustard. I tried all three. The Hot Sauce seemd to have the better flavor. It did help accent the flavor of the meat instead of subbing for it.
Side dishes were so so...The beans tasted like the standard canned Ranch Beans that you can get at Kroger, and the Cole Slaw was a bit runny.
The Fried Apples were good though.
Two thumbs up on their bull chips!
If I could make some suggestions I would say: Put greens on your menu as a side dish. and offer Cornbread and or Biscuits also.
It was a good meal and I will be back to try the chicken next time.
So far out of the bbq places I've been here..this one shows the most promise...
With warmer weather finally coming our way, it's time to make your way back to the front porch at Hoghead's. I've never had a bad meal here and always enjoy hanging out watching the people on the Monon go by.
I'm no BBQ connoisseur, but I don't like anything super sweet or overpoweringly smoky. There are a couple different types of sauces on the tables here, which is nice, so you can pick your flavor -- original, hot or spicy mustard.
Our service has always been prompt and friendly.
If you haven't been but have been meaning to, it's a great addition to this area of the Village. With places like the Brewpub, Plumps, Rene's and La Piedad nearby, it's a great alternative if you're feeling like some homey, hearty grub.
I highly recommend the pulled pork. The real scene stealer for me is the buffalo chips. I love those fried potato chips.
The apple butter and biscuits are scrumptious.
I ate there last week on a wonderful Spring day when Broadripple was buzzing. The Monon Trail was packed and the porch at Hoghead's provided a great people watching spot. The staff was friendly and the beer specials were perfect. The food was great. I wish they still had a location in Brownsburg, but I can live with it. If you enjoy barbeque, you have to give this place a try.
Best Damn Barbeque in Indiana!!!!
Recently, I visited the Hog Head's BBQ in broadripple with my girlfriend. The decor was perfect, I almost felt like I was back at Grandpa's house sitting down for a family meal. It not only looks great inside, but they have a huge deck and good views of Broad Ripple outside. Seeing as how I am a born and bred Ripparian, I was initially leary of a BBQ joint in Ripple, since Dick's Bodacious already tried that and failed miserably. I ordered the ribs, (of course), with a side of baked beans and cheesy potatoes. My girlfriend had pulled chicken with baked beans and coleslaw. To start with, these are the most succulent, tender, fall off the bone, juicy ribs I have ever been privlidged enough to eat. The baked beans were perfect, with just the right balance of smoke flavor and savory. The potatoes are fantastic, cheesy and baked to perfection. The pulled chicken is smoky, well seasoned, and moist. If you, like myself, have been dissapointed with the lack of good down home style BBQ in this city, weep no longer! Hoghead's is THE place for BBQ in Indy, period.
