Creation Cafe (337 W. 11th Street, Indianapolis, IN)10
I am biased, my girlfriend has worked at this place since it opened and was under the original management. So I’ve got a strange perspective on the place.
They have their liquor license now, so any of the alcohol related concerns are taken care of, beer and wine for everyone. The Cabernet for $6 a glass is pretty darn good.
My recommendations:
The Fiendish Fish Sandwich – It’s big, they bread it themselves and cook it. It’s good. It’s 10x better than anything you could get at a chain sea food restaurant.
The Nachos!!!!! – Get them with barbecue pork instead of the plain, just tell your server. They are wonderful, seriously they are.
The Steak Sandwich – You can’t believe how much this thing costs once you’re eating it. It’s that good. (as in you can’t believe it’s that cheap)
I am not a fan of the pizza, it just isn’t my style. I know several people who love the cheese one with it’s strong smokey flavor and white sauce, but I pass. Their servers are sooo much better these days and their current staff has always treated me very well.
Finally a reason to return to the canal…that doesn’t involve exercise.

Thai Cafe (1041 Broad Ripple Ave., Indianapolis, IN)3
Get your food Thai Hot if you like to have your taste buds bleed with delight while you dine. While your wiping away your tears you can enjoy the insane eyeball cloud thingy hanging from the ceiling. (mortals though should probably just stick with ordering their food normal, it’s well seasoned and tasty)
I’m particularly partial to their chicken dishes here. I’m allergic to peanuts and can’t experience the Pad Thai everyone raves about. I’ve got to stay away from peanut dipping sauces as well, the staff here is always helpful and has always been very good about making sure I don’t eat peanut goo.
The vegetarian sprint rolls are crunchy treat!

Ugly Monkey (50 W. South St., Indianapolis, IN)
This is bar with a split personality and a strange history.
I remember the old location well, with the midget giving upside down shots and the nudie photos on the walls. They’ve cleaned up their act a bit with the new place and seem to have a good thing going on.
The DJ room is packed to the gills on the weekend, my glasses steamed up last time I walked in there. It was ridiculous.
The other half of the bar is a more of chilled out pub atmosphere with tables and benches. It’s more my speed and a decent little place to have a drink.
P.S. There’s a raised platform in the DJ room where ladies are encouraged to shake it.

Old Spaghetti Factory (210 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN)10
This place gets an extra star not based on the food, but based on the ambience. If it weren’t for its whacky ambience it’d get 3 stars. Ambience? It’s got that in oodles. From the dinner car in the middle of the place to the eery underground blue bathrooms it’s an experience.
It’s not really fine dining don’t be confused, it’s not bad dining either. It’s squarely in the middle. The crab ravioli is very good and the multi-course dinner entrees are nice. It’s always good to finish up with some spumoni.
It makes me smile and I enjoy going there, the bar upstairs ain’t half bad, it’s got more style than substance.. It does do it’s job and make those 45minute waits to get seated much more bearable. The big carafe of the house red is affordable and fine.
It’s interesting :-)

Mousetrap Sports Pub and Game Room (5565 N. Keystone Ave., Indianapolis, IN)
The Mousetrap on nights when there’s no live music is the definition of low key. It’s a great place at that point to relax with a cold brew and shoot some pool on the slightly mangled pool tables. It might take you a second to find a straight cue, but who cares.
On the nights when there is live music the place is hoppin and the bands are generally very good with a wide variety of local talent.
I’ve been going there for years and don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Fun fun.

MacNiven's Restaurant and Bar (339 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis, IN)13
If you haven’t at least seen one of the cheeseburgers at MacNiven’s you’re missing out on something truly odd. They are thick as three sticks of gum and twice as wide as the bun they come on. They are also tasty.
The grilled cheese is one of the best in town, I know it’s simple, but it’s perfect. Their beer selection is good to boot, Young’s Stout!
The Irish stew is good too and I remember the french dip being very good. Mmmm, makes me re-consider giving them only four stars.
I look forward to the summer and the front being open to the Avenue.

Varsity Lounge (1517 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN)
They’ve got rumaki. Bonus points. I used to live right next door on Talbott street and hit this little dive up during the week days for diner.
If you can get the mashed potatoes they are excellent, but they only have them once in a while. The staff is friendly, but soft drinks come in cans. Kind of strange, gets expensive. The cheese burgers are awesome and so are the chicken fingers.
They also have liquor to go, which is getting rare.
Watch out, on weekends I hear the man heat tends to dance on the bar :-)

Mo'Joe Coffeehouse (222 W. Michigan St., Indianapolis, IN)1
I went to school in this building for four years. How weird is that. The coffee drinks are good and I like the decor.
It’s strange sitting and drinking an iced mocha where I spend all that time loading film in the dark.
Free Wifi should be the standard for Coffee houses, paying for it while you relax in 2008 is silliness. Thumbs up to Mo’Joe!
The location is kind of in the middle of nowhere as far as downtown is concerned, that’s the only downside.
-
Panera Bread (10777 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN)2
I hate eating on the West Side. The choices are so limited, but bread is always good. Panera is a safe bet. Sometimes my special someone comes home with a tasty loaf of bread from here for me, that just makes my day.
The little pizza things are kind of strange, I’ve not been impressed with them. The soup bread bowl is wonderful and their paninis are always good.
The location is pretty nice and the interior is warm and inviting.

Old Point Tavern (401 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis, IN)9
You always have a vibrant glow inside the Old Point. Mainly thanks to the large windows with red neon signs. It’s kind of cool. The chili is darn good as are the nacho’s, like Kevin says.
The have bottles of Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal stout and a good selection of other brews.
The joint is at its best in the summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the air. It’s kind of entertaining in the winter when the huge glass walls fog up and it take on a womb like ambience. With beer.
-
Noodles & Company (903 Indiana Ave., Indianapolis, IN)3
I’ve got to say I preferred this joint as Nothing but Noodles. It’s still good, but it’s missing a bit of goodness that it had before.
I still enjoy meeting with some of my friends from IUPUI here on occasion. I do appreciate the ability to have almost any meal as vegetarian or add beef, chicken, or tofu to any dish.
I’m partial to the spicey cajun. Noodles are good.
-
Le Peep Restaurant (301 N. Illinois St., Indianapolis, IN)6
I love love love the potato skillet meals at Le Peep’s, just about anything there is tasty. The Road Runner chicken sandwich is another favorite of mine.
Once while dinning there they accidently held on to my debit card. I realized it later that day and gave them a call. When I came back two days later to reclaim my card they bought me a breakfast for my trouble.
The servers are great and the atmosphere is polished without being unrelaxed. Something I need at 9am.

Indy's Family Restaurant (2544 S. Lynhurst Drive, Indianapolis, IN)1
It’s unassuming and tucked in front of La Quinta hotel. The “Big Bob’s Belly Buster Fish Sandwich” is a fine bit of crunchy fish on bread. The staff is friendly and speedy.
The chicken fingers are also good as is the BLT, which I prefer to pronounce phonetically for the waitress for the sake of my amusement. I’ve never had the pleasure of eating on the porch with it’s awesome view of the Airport Expressway, but perhaps that will change.
They sometimes have welded motorcycle sculptures on the checkout counter, bonus points.
-
Dick's Bodacious Bar-B-Q (50 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN)5
Dick’s ain’t bad, it’s also not the best, but it is downtown on Penn. They also have at least one dark beer on tap, which gives them points in my book.
The BBQ isn’t competitive with other local BBQ places, the sauces aren’t all that and a bag of chips and the side dishes don’t make me feel like I’m back at aunt Patty’s house in Louisiana.
Skip it and pick another BBQ dive unless you need a quick fix and can’t leave the DT area.
-
Bob Evans Farms Restaurant (7649 E. US 36, Avon, IN)1
I get the pleasure of eating here around once a month. This particular location has a wonderful view of 465 and Rockville Rd. It’s also completely impossible to get in or out of the parking lot during rush hour.
I’ve had a lot of time to try everything on the menu here and I recommend the slow roasted dinners. The turkey and stuffing is good, the beef slow roasted thingy ain’t half bad. The meatloaf here is hit and miss so is the service. They’ve recently got some new wait staff who are very good. Thumbs up for that!
Having said all that it is Bob Evan’s. I get looked up and down like I’m an alien every time I walk into the joint. It doesn’t get more middle american than this, that’s kind of a turn off. Like dinning at Cracker Barrel. I like to wear my hammer and cycle t-shirt and cary my cane when I go there.
The apple pie is good!
-
Beer Sellar (6466 E. 82nd St., Indianapolis, IN)
The Wall of Beer Taps is the only thing to eat at the Beer Sellar. I mean seriously why would any self respecting beer fanatic go to this place?
There’s a shuffle board too, which is awesome. You’ve got to get a place in line some nights. People like to play.
It’s friendly and kind of english pub feeling inside, with a bit of american sports bar thrown in for good measure. It’s too open to really feel that pub like.
They’ve got Young’s Double Chocolate Stout on tap. Did you hear that? It’s 13.75 for a pitcher, that’s a steal.
-
Apple Tree Restaurant (1301 S. High School Road, Indianapolis, IN)5
My grandparents live next to this place. It’s sister restaurants are “The Elegance” and “The Paragon”.
The food is big and simple. Don’t confuse that with bad. The gyro’s are great, they come with big chunks of cubed feta (they don’t bother to crumble that stuff). My grandpa loves the cabbage soup, I think they serve it on Wednesdays. The fish is actually half decent and the beer battered cod is a step above most diner fare.
They’ve got a dessert carousel that normally has good napoleon’s and eclairs from a local bakery.
The owners are incredibly nice and know my family by name.
-
Uno Chicago Grill (3716 E. 82nd St., Indianapolis, IN)3
Uno’s here is not the Uno’s in Chicago. That should be obvious but we can always hope. The pizza’s not half bad, it’s actually pretty good. It’s definitely missing something compared to the real deal in Chi-town though.
Once you’ve been there you’re spoiled. I think it’s a wee bit overpriced and my servers have bee slow every time.
-
Red Lobster (10189 E. U.S. 36, Avon, IN)1
It’s sad but the best thing about this place are the biscuits and the appetizers. The sea food is sub par rubbish. The staff is fine most of the time.
Here’s my strategy for Red Lobster. Eat lots of Cheddar Bay Biscuits, eat an appetizer, either skip the entree or pick at it, and have something chocolate for dessert.
My family likes to hit this place up and I can never believe how busy it is. It must be the West Side or something.
-
Nordstrom Grill (130 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN)1
The grill is fine, the fare is way better than other mall food. Their sandwiches are a strong suite and so are the pasta dishes.
I was always partial to the salmon dishes, if you spend a lot of time at Circle Center it’s worth giving it a whirl. The specials are generally very good.
Nothing to too memorable, but nothing offensive. Which is wonderful when you’re in the shiny wonder that is the mall.
