“500 Days of Summer,” the new and much-buzzed-about Zooey Deschanel romantic comedy, will be screened during the 2009 Indianapolis International Film Festival in July.

“500 Days” is one of 105 independent films to make the cut at the festival, July 15-25 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Films were selected from more than 400 entries from 38 countries, and range greatly in subject matter and length (from the two-minute “Marshy” to the nearly three-hour “Badland”).

One thread that carries through the film festival is a lineup of documentaries.

“Best Worst Movie” shows the aftermath of starring in “Troll 2,” critically deemed the worst movie ever; and “Racing Dreams,” which follows three teens as they balance normal life with their love of racing.

“Every year we have a theme — last year our films seemed to be very dark. This year, we are really heavy in documentaries. They’ll make you laugh out loud. They go deep into people’s lives,” said festival President Dorothy Henckel.

This year’s program also is more online-focused than ever.

“People can go online and more easily see the schedule, see trailers, view blogs. They can make their own schedules online,” Henckel said. “Last year, the program was greater than 30 pages. This year, we’re going with a much smaller version. We’re trying to move to a greener film festival.”

Judges will make awards for films in the festival, which also includes opening- and closing-night parties and appearances by actors and directors.
