ZIONSVILLE — The schedule didn’t give Zionsville Marching Eagles any breaks Saturday.

The Eagles fell short in their mission to make it to their first state finals. Zionsville was appearing in its second consecutive Indiana State School Music Association semistate in cold and windy weather Saturday.

The band, which performed “Rhapsody,” took the field just before 2 p.m., performing fifth out of 20 bands at Pike High School on Indianapolis Northwestside. It was one of the coldest (49 degrees) and most windy parts of the afternoon.

An hour later the sun came out and wind died down, according to band publicity chairwoman Julie Rauschuber. Wind can create problems for instruments such as the horns.

Zionsville’s band wasn’t the only one to catch a bad weather break. Rauschuber said just two of the seven bands from the cold, windy part of the day advanced while eight of the remaining 13 advanced after the weather improved.

Zionsville had earned its highest scoring of the season at the regional Oct. 17 at Lafayette Jefferson High School.
