Your Spring Break Soundtrack
Matt Conner is out avoiding lameness in Vegas right now, so we’re posting this for him:
I was lame in college. And even in high school. Spring breaks were mostly spent working to make some extra money or sitting at home with the ‘rents because I didn’t have much else to do. I’d hang out with friends, go to movies, sleep until 5pm and do whatever chores I was told to do so I didn’t waste my life away. But there were the few excursions – those years I would actually think and plan ahead enough with friends to say, “Hey, aren’t we getting a bunch of time off soon? We should DO something!” Then we would cheer and forget about it because Super Mario Kart controllers were in our hands and we didn’t want to lose on Rainbow Road.
Yet here we are in the time of year when Spring Break descends upon most for the next few weeks, which seems a prime time to consider the essential Spring Break ‘09 soundtrack. For those who want to make a mix, we’d consider it our pleasure to help you grab those songs that will make you stick your head out of the sunroof, grab some beads along the way, sit poolside in the warming sun or lose the headache after the hangover. More than anything, these songs convince to wake up and do it all over again the next day.
Of course, my experience is limited so I only offer a few songs. You, faithful reader, should contribute your part to this Spring-Break-Mixopedia of sorts. My offerings:
1. Poison – Nothin’ But A Good Time – How can this not be at the top of the list? Of course, I’m not THAT old enough to say “back when I was in college” on this tune, but it definitely still provided a good time nonetheless for Daytona and Myrtle Beach memories. Plus, even Bret Michaels wants to know, ‘How can I resist?’
2. Beastie Boys – Fight For Your Right to Party – This is the most obvious of all. The key is this perfect SB chorus which makes everyone in the room raise their fist and yell along with the crowd.
3. Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – So, this would be perfect except I’m not a girl, but I can still have fun all the same, right?
4. Outkast – Hey Ya – “Shake it like a polaroid picture” will be sung for generations to come. Nuff said.
5. Steppenwolf – Born to Be Wild – Gotta love a road trip song that even describes headin’ out on the highway and getting the motor runnin’. This is the song that needs to be playing when you hit the entrance ramp onto the Interstate.
So these are the first five. You have anything you want to add?
