You can help ex-offenders at risk of homelessness
Matthew Tully pointed out in his June 28 column, “Carson’s bill to aid ex-cons make sense,” that not enough is being done to help ex-offenders successfully re-enter society; therefore, recidivism rates remain at unacceptable levels. Tully mentioned the “hardworking groups” that are working to ease this problem. Trusted Mentors is one.
Trusted Mentors Inc. is a nonprofit agency in Indianapolis that provides trained, volunteer mentors to adults at risk of homelessness, including ex-offenders, who face enormous struggles. Our mentors contribute to an individual’s oft-depleted support network by being there to listen, encourage and assist in the development of essential life skills.
A mentor is an important resource in the business world, a resource that Trusted Mentors offers to 13 agencies that serve those at risk. As Tully wrote, many people don’t realize that assistance to ex-offenders will help everyone. We are always in need of volunteer mentors, especially males.
