Worthless battle over guns; Constitution settles matter

Over the past several weeks I have noticed several letters from readers in the opinion section that argue for or against gun control. They often state statistics, try to delineate between which types of guns are acceptable or not, and go back forth on the right to carry a weapon. I hope that I am not the only person who realizes this is a waste of time and energy. The U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. It also unequivocally states that this right “shall not be infringed.” Nowhere in the wording does it mention hunting, sport shooting, whether you are on a college campus or national park, or any other conditions that limit this right. This makes all the banter back and forth absolutely moot.

God forbid readers start debating the right to freedom of speech or religion.
