Construction has started to widen and improve traffic flow through one of Avon’s busiest intersections at U.S. 36 and Dan Jones Road.

Tens of thousands of cars a day pass through the area, and many will be affected by lane closings on Dan Jones.

The project, estimated at more than $1.05 million, is focused on improvements to the north and south approaches of Dan Jones to U.S. 36, which runs east-west.

The road work comes soon after Dan Jones and County Road 100 North reopened Aug. 12 with a roundabout constructed this summer. As workers complete the finishing touches on the roundabout, other crews began the Dan Jones and U.S. 36 project by setting up barrels to control traffic.

Ryan Cannon, Avon Public Works director, said the work would add a through lane for the Dan Jones traffic. It also would add medians to prevent bottlenecks and unsafe turns into driveways and parking lots close to the intersection.

Cannon said the road work is divided into four phases beginning with widening Dan Jones. Then new storm sewers will be installed on both sides of the road, new concrete medians will be added, and the area will be repaved.

If the weather stays dry, he said, all phases could be done this year. Otherwise, half will be done this construction season and the rest in the spring.

During construction, traffic will have to snake through a barricade zone. Access will be limited but not prohibited.
