Where else to shop
When shopping specialty markets, don’t be afraid to ask for help, advised chef Karl Benko, whether it’s finding a particular product or identifying unusual ingredients. The Indianapolis area boasts plenty of small ethnic and gourmet shops. Here are a few:
El Bodegon
8510 E. 96th St., Fishers; (317) 841-3350; www.elbodegon-indy.com.
This new market, deli and tapas bar focuses on South American and Spanish foods. You’ll find deli meats, cheeses, wines, beers, sodas and coffees, as well as dine-in and carryout fare.
Goose the Market
2503 N. Delaware St.; (317) 924-4944; www. goosethemarket.com.
This little shop is primarily a specialty meat market, with a wide variety of smoked and cured meats; it also takes seafood orders and will be offering game birds. Goose also stocks some fresh produce and locally produced items. It offers sandwiches as well. Don’t miss the downstairs area, which features beer, wine and imported foods.
International Bazaar
4225 Lafayette Road; (317) 299-4628; www .ibgrocery.com.
This grocery specializes in Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern foods. You’ll find spices, teas, snacks and mixes, as well as fresh and frozen foods.
Saraga International Grocery
3605 Commercial Drive; (317) 388-9999; www.saragafood.net.
With its aisles devoted to different countries, the international market is a resource for all sorts of authentic ingredients. Seasonings are often the key to capturing the flavor of a cuisine. You’ll find items such as black vinegar, pomegranate molasses, toasted sesame oil, red chili paste, mango and green chili chutney — and many other distinctive ingredients. The store also stocks plenty of frozen foods, mixes, convenience items, fresh meats, seafood and produce.
