WFYI, Ball State win Regional Emmys

WFYI received nine Regional Emmy Awards and Ball State walked away with three statuettes. The awards were presented by the Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of the Arts and Sciences on Saturday in Cleveland.

The WFYI winning documentaries and programs:

“Indiana Expeditions with Rick Crosslin,” a science adventure series, won for Best Children/Youth Program Series.

“The Natural Heritage of Indiana” received awards for Best Health/Science Program and Best Photographer (Non-News).

“Across Indiana” won three Emmys for Best Magazine Series, Best Human Interest Segment and Best Writer (Non-News).

“Mickey’s Corner with Sylvia McNair” won for Best Interview/Discussion Program Series.

Two WFYI arts and cultural productions also earned awards. “A Reason to Dance” — a segment produced by Vinnie Manganello — won for Best Magazine Feature Story. A video production co-produced by WFYI and the Arts Council of Indianapolis won for Best Advanced Media Crafts — Writer/Producer. Mike Knight wrote and produced the project.

Ball State received an Emmy for technical achievement thanks to its $21 million David Letterman Communication and Media Building.

“This award is another testament to the strong support David Letterman has provided over the years,” said Roger Lavery, dean of the College for Communication, Information and Media, in a news release about the award.

The university also picked up two other Emmys on Saturday.

Telecommunications major Riley Fields, a senior from Spencer, Ind., received an Emmy as editor in the non-news category for the documentary “State of Assault.”

Jeffrey Laub, a 2008 grad with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, won and Emmy as producer in the children/youth special category for the educational DVD “Finding Harmony.”
