Westfield — The City Council is poised to vote on a proposed smoking ban next month.

This week, the council saw changes made to the proposal. The biggest would allow smoking in bars or restaurants in which only people ages 21 and older are allowed.

The ban would prohibit smoking in public places, including outdoor arenas, stadiums and amphitheaters, enclosed places of employment such as offices, and restaurants and bars that admit people younger than 21.

Smoking still would be allowed in private homes unless they are licensed child-care, adult day-care or health-care facilities. Hotels and motels still could have designated smoking rooms.

The vote will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at City Hall.
