Shamrocks’ qualifier in state championship went from 10th to 77th

Connor Martin isn’t sure what happened.

Running in 10th place with 1,000 meters left in Saturday’s 5,000-meter boys cross-country state finals, the Westfield junior began to lose power in his legs.

Martin finished 77th in 17 minutes, 30.7 seconds.

“My legs just locked up,” he said.

“I’m still confused about it. It’s kind of hard to explain . . . . . At Culver (about a month earlier), it happened, but not nearly as bad as it did (Saturday).

“Physically, I’m the fittest I’ve ever been, but we think internally, something might be up.”

Martin qualified for the state meet as an individual with a seventh-place finish in 15:48.8 in the Carmel Semistate.

He won the Carmel Sectional in 15:27.7 and was third in 15:44.7 in the Brebeuf Regional, where he led the Shamrocks to a seventh-place team finish.

“It’s my best cross season so far,” Martin said.

“My goal has always been just to leave it all out there. You can never be upset with yourself if that’s how it goes.

“(Saturday) wasn’t the best, but I’m keeping my head up about it.”
