Rain or shine, the crowd usually picks up around 5 p.m. each Friday at this summer’s Westfield Farmers Market.

About seven or eight vendors each week have sold fresh produce. Raspberries, blackberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions sat ready for picking at the most recent market.

John Schaaf, market manager for the Downtown Westfield Neighborhood Association, pointed out one item no one should pass by one of the baked goods available.

He doesn’t.

It’s chocolate cake from Sheridan’s Log Cabin Bakery.

“I always bring it home,” Schaaf said.

But does he sneak a bite before he gets the cake home?

Of course, he said.

“It gets all warm in my truck, while it’s setting there.”

The Westfield Market will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. each Friday through Oct. 3. The next Friday market will feature a fire department cook-off, according to the sponsoring association’s Web site, www.dwna.org.
