Westfield — The City Council has decided some smoking restrictions are necessary.

“I don’t think that’s something that can be avoided any further,” council member Bob Smith said.

The City Council appointed a three-member committee to consider changing a proposed smoking ban. The council hopes to have a new draft to review in August, council member Bob Horkay said, but hasn’t set a date for a vote.

The committee’s meetings will be closed to the public because subcommittee meetings are usually private, Westfield spokeswoman Carrie Cason said.

The proposed ordinance bans smoking in all public places, including restaurants, bars, businesses and 80 percent of hotel rooms.

The majority of the people who spoke at a public hearing last month supported a ban. But several business owners and residents told the council that smoking needs to be allowed in some places.
