Wayne Twp. elementaries to get portable classrooms
Two Wayne Township Elementary schools will soon have portable classrooms installed.
Due to a population increase of more than 440 students, classrooms are scarce.
That is especially true at the elementary level, where the Westside district saw a big increase, especially in students enrolled in full-day kindergarten.
Portable units will be installed at the North Wayne and Chapelwood elementary schools, said Cheri O’Day, district spokeswoman.
It hasn’t been determined which classes will move to the units, but it would likely be those with older students or classes for subjects such as art and music.
The district already owns the modular classrooms because they were used during the building renovation for Ben Davis University High School.
Classrooms will be installed as soon as the district receives the permits, O’Day said.
The district will absorb most of the cost, since their maintenance workers will install the classrooms, she added.
A $106,000 grant from Lowe’s will help pay for the rest.
