Warren among 15 honored as 'Inspiring Women'
Judi Warren wasn’t sure people still remembered her basketball playing and coaching days.
The Indiana Fever did. They will honor Warren as part of their Class of 2009 Inspiring Women at halftime of today’s 7 p.m. game against the Connecticut Sun at Conseco Fieldhouse.
“It’s kind of shocking,” Warren said. “It’s very unexpected. It’s been a long time since I’ve been out of it. I thought people would forget by now, but it’s also nice to think that you might have inspired someone along the way.”
Warren was named Indiana’s first Miss Basketball after leading Warsaw to the IHSAA’s inaugural girls championship in 1976. After playing at Franklin College, she coached at South Dearborn and Maconaquah high schools before coaching at Carmel from 1988 to 2000.
Warren was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Hamilton County Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.
Ruth Callon, who coached Warren at Franklin College, also will be among the 15 honored tonight.
“She’s one that kind of inspired me as far as coaching and trying to do things the right way and treat people the right way,” Warren said. “She was a very good role model. I’m not sure I lived up to her role as a coach. She was and still is very kind to all of her players.”
