Veterans day calendar
Downtown Indianapolis will have the traditional Veterans Day Parade on Wednesday, but it’s only one of many ways that the area will honor men and women in military service during the next week.
From church ceremonies to a "Cut-a-Thon’’ fundraiser to a Downtown hike, churches, schools and other organizations have scheduled events that begin Sunday. Admission is free unless otherwise noted.
Here’s a sampling of the events:
Sunday
Veterans program, 8:15 to 11 a.m. First United Methodist Church, 2051 E. Monument St., Noblesville. Also, the 38th Division Army Jazz Band performs at 7 p.m.
“Veterans Day Remembered: Honoring Our Hoosier Heroes,” 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Indiana State Museum, 650 W. Washington St. The program recognizes five “Hoosier Heroes” from 1 to 3 p.m., with a concert of patriotic music by the Indianapolis Municipal Band at 3 p.m. $7; seniors, $6.50; children, $4; veterans, free.
" Honoring Our Veterans" ceremony, 1 to 4 p.m. Flanner&Buchanan Community Life Center, 10722 E. Washington St. Includes an appearance by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.
Veterans Day ceremony, 2 to 3 p.m. Crown Hill Cemetery (main entrance), 700 W. 38th St. In the Field of Valor section west of the mausoleum.
Indianapolis Municipal Band, 3 p.m. Sunday. Indiana State Museum, 650 W. Washington St. Guest conductor: Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Richard Shelton.
Military, Veterans and Family Dinner, 6 p.m. Christ Our Shepherd Church of the Brethren, 857 N. Ind. 135, Greenwood. Free dinner for military veterans and their families to honor those who are serving and who have served in the armed forces.
Tuesday
Carmel’s Veterans Day ceremony, noon. Carmel Civic Square, 1 Civic Square, Carmel. Participants include Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard, Carmel VFW/American Legion Honor Guard, Carmel Elementary School choir and the Actors Theatre of Indiana’s own “Andrews Sisters.”
Greenwood High School and Whiteland High School choirs , 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Greenwood Community High School, 615 W. Smith Valley Road, Greenwood. A Veterans Day concert features patriotic songs. Guest conductor: Dan Anderson from Center Grove Schools. $2; students, $1.
Wednesday
Veterans Day Cut-a-Thon Benefit, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at area Sport Clips location. The “Biggest Haircut Day of the Year” will benefit the VFW’s Operation Uplink, a program that offers free call days and calling cards for deployed and hospitalized American soldiers. Veterans Day Drive, 9 a.m. to noon. Indiana War Memorial, 431 N. Meridian St. Collection of essential personal and clothing items for hospitalized veterans.
“Honoring Our Veterans,” 10 to 11 a.m. Crestwood Village East, 1300 N. Edmondson Ave. A celebration of veterans through music, reflection and speeches.
Veterans Day Memorial Service and Parade, 11 a.m. Indiana War Memorial, 431 N. Meridian St. The service honoring area veterans begins at 11 a.m. The annual parade begins at 11:30 a.m. at Michigan and Pennsylvania streets, heads south to New York Street, then west to Meridian Street and north to St. Clair Street.
Veterans Day Tribute, 1 to 3 p.m. Westside Garden Plaza, 8616 W. 10th St. Includes appearances by U.S. Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Monticello, and state Rep. Phil Hinkle, R-Indianapolis.
Indianapolis Hiking Club: Veterans Day Hike, 2 p.m. White River State Park, 801 W. Washington St. Meet in the parking lot for a six-mile hike past various veterans memorials on flat, paved terrain. Arrive 15 minutes early. Guests welcome. Check with the leader in the event of inclement weather. $2 surface lot parking fee.
Hamilton County Navy Club Ship No. 29 Commissioning, 7 p.m. Eddie’s Corner Cafe, 101 N. 10th St., Noblesville. Veterans Day commissioning of a new veterans organization for Hamilton County’s honorably discharged Navy, Marine and Coast Guard veterans and those on active duty. Dues to join Ship 29 are $20 annually.
