Some three dozen employees of Roche Diagnostics, a Northeastside-based
life-sciences company, spent their day spreading mulch and painting jungle
gyms at an Indianapolis Public Schools facility.

The effort at Frances W. Parker School 56 was part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.

The Roche workers, with materials donated by Lowe’s home-improvement store and alongside a dozen Lowe’s workers, were among more than 2,500 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves as part of the United Way’s two-day volunteer event.

The volunteers were expected to give about 10,000 hours of their time, which the United Way calculates is worth $202,500.

“I give money (to United Way), too, and that’s vital,” said Tim Huston, a Roche marketing director moonlighting as a mulch master, “but actually doing something with your hands, it really gives you a good feeling.”
