A new church that encourages spiritual growth is holding its first public services Sunday.

Members of the Heartland Unitarian Universalist Church began meeting last summer with services every three weeks at Eagle Creek Park, said Rebecca Elliott, board chair.

“We are a free and responsible church, meaning we draw from all religious traditions,” Elliott said. “We are on a spiritual journey, and we all have our own path.”

The church began meeting more frequently in the fall and winter at various locations, Elliott said. Now, they have found rental space in a building where Meridian Music tunes pianos on 96th Street west of Michigan Road.

In addition to regular services, Zionsville resident Laura Bobeck leads children’s religious studies.

Children ages 5 to 12 learn the follow the church’s seven principles by studying the world religions curriculum through various topics including various religions celebrations and the spring equinox, Bobeck said.

Heartland hopes to call its own minister in the summer of 2010.
