Undead and loving it

The undead players of Here Come the Mummies care about funk music, fine food and flirting with women.

Their appearance? Not so much.

Band members -- who will headline a Halloween show Oct. 31 at the Vogue -- have worn the same thing for 80 years.

"The mummies have been around for thousands of years, but their most recent wrap was done in the 1920s in the Bronx by a Hasidic hat maker," band spokesman Baron Von Doompfwagen says in a phone interview.

Because the mummies' offstage vocabulary is limited to groans and grunts, Von Doompfwagen deals with media inquiries. His responsibilities also include making repairs to the rags worn by Oozy Mummy, Mummy Cass and other band members.

The musicians don't require 400-threadcount luxury in their bandages, Von Doompfwagen says.

"You can buy anything you want," he adds. "They don't care. You can go to Wal-Mart."

While speculating that hats and necklaces may appear as onstage accessories at the Halloween show, Von Doompfwagen also predicts that a few mummies will be seen in the audience.

"Sometimes people wrap light and use toilet paper," he says. "That's funny, but a few fans have made costumes that look great."

One fan dressed in tribute to one of the band's songs, "Attack of the Weiner Man": Sporting an apron and a paper hat, the concertgoer resembled the street vendor who caters to -- and sometimes kills -- late-night revelers as portrayed in the lyrics.

Here Come the Mummies, believed to be a group of ace session players from Nashville, Tenn., who guard their privacy, issued an album titled "Single Entendre" earlier this year. "Horizontal Mambo," "Libido Knievel" and "Walk of Shame" represent a mere sampler of its bedroom-themed songs.

"The Halloween costumes the mummies respond to the most are the ones that come off the quickest," Von Doompfwagen says.
