Two for $20: Deano's Vino

How fancy are we -- squeezing in a wine bar lunch for under $20? Deano's Vino in Fountain Square was a budget challenge, although without booze on our bill, I didn't think it would be.

New tag-along Mary provided good company in this near-Downtown hot spot more suited for the after-work enjoyment of adult beverages.

The mood

OK, so 'tis a bar, but being open for lunch requires being prepared for patrons and having a lunch menu to suit.

Upon entering we quickly discovered ourselves alone in the restaurant. Invited to choose our own seats, we sat down at the window table in the bar, where the employees were gathered, instead of being completely and utterly alone in the main and separate dining room.

The walls, decorated with bar kitsch and a massive floor-to-ceiling wine rack, contrasted with the rich paint and scattered tables. The dining room includes booths, great for a snuggly date.

Again, being the lone lunch guests, at least for most of our nearly two-hour lunch, the mood was mainly lacking. People make the place. And here, our hosts were discussing time sheets and new hires loudly behind the bar as we attempted to converse.

The food

From what I saw, the dinner and lunch menus are very similar. Remove the sandwiches, add on some steak and pasta dishes, shimmy the order around and voila! There's nothing wrong with overlapping items, but dinner costs should outweigh those of lunch.

For the lunch hour, soups and salad top the list, followed by appetizers of shrimp cocktail and pizza.

Platters, best paired with your favorite cab or pinot, were next. Meat platters, salmon platters, cheeses, fruit -- whatever you prefer to nibble while you nip -- and none for less than $7.

Sandwiches and more pizza round out the choices.

Wanting to try something out of the ordinary, and struggling to find it, I went the opposite way: comfort food. Grilled cheese for $6 (but it's gourmet, right?) and a cup of French onion soup ($3.50).

Flaky white bread housed the gooey goodness of what was supposed to be Gouda and provolone, although it tasted mainly like cheddar.

I also attempted to add on grilled onions, tomato and parmesan for an extra buck, but it didn't arrive that way, and my lunch pal wasn't in the mood to wait for a new sandwich.

Also on my plate was tasty Italian-style penne pasta salad.

The soup was flavorful and gooey with herb croutons floating in the broth.

Mary chose the Deano's Delight bison burger, served with the same pasta salad. Mouthwatering on the menu, with promises of balsamic glaze, gorgonzola, bleu cheese and tomatoes, it arrived minus said cheeses but with parmesan instead.

The drinks

Water, not turned into wine.

The damage: $21.60

I've tried Deano's twice and both times the service was absolutely horrible. The first time I went there I waited 45 minutes for a caesar salad...no chicken, nothing fancy...just a plain old caesar salad. Thinking that this might have just been a one time, poor service deal, I tried Deano's a second time only to wait about 15 minutes for a server to even come to the table to greet us. Needless to say, we walked out of the place. I don't think I'll ever go there again. It's a shame, too, because I always try to support my neighborhood. I guess that means more business for Shelbi Street Cafe.

Same here. And what's worse, once a friend of mine ate there and ordered a fruit and veggie plate. The tomatoes were rotten! When she complained about it the server shrugged and told her their shipment hadn't come in so they had to make an emergency trip to Bud's Supermarket!!!

Ewww! And he didn't even offer to take some off her bill.

Their wine selection is good, but unfortunately, although they have several varieties of one brand of wine on the menu that's cheaper than the rest they offer (can't remember the name), if you ask for it they inform you they don't carry it anymore. So change the freakin' menu, why don't you!

And I totally relate to the menu offerings not matching up to the actual meal. It goes for their desserts, too, which are pretty good but definitely overpriced and skimpy. If I pay $6.99 for a piece of chocolate torte, it had better cause me to make yum-yum noises, or else it ain't worth it.

I don’t know what it was like “back in the day” but I know since I’ve been going, the last two years, it’s been as advertised; “Good Friends, Good Food, Good Wine.”

The wine selection changes often, as do the seasons. More big Cabernets during the winter, more light Pinot Noirs or whites in the summer. And for good reason. Who would want to drink a heavy red on a hot summer day, or a crisp white on a cold Indiana night?

Wine tastings on Wednesday are always packed, as no one in the city will teach you more about wine…and only $5! Wednesdays and the weekends are also filled with free, live entertainment. True, lunch in Fountain Square doesn’t draw much of a crowd anywhere; not just Deano’s. That being said, you always know you’ll get seated right away, and not have to wait for your lunch.

If you haven’t tried them lately, go back and see for yourself. I’ve always found good friends, good food, and good wine.
