Two for $20: BARcelona Tapas Restaurant

What could be better than a meal made up entirely of finger foods? We were on a very specific mission for this Two for $20: We knew it would be possible to make budget at BARcelona Tapas Restaurant, but we wanted to see how far we could stretch Andy Jackson. The meat dishes, albeit yummy, are smaller portions and often more expensive, so we stuck with our vegetarian side.

Our discovery? You could probably feed three average-sized humans for $20.

With 75 cents to spare, we didn't have enough to get a $16 ($10 on Wednesdays!) pitcher of sangria, but maybe that's all we'll order next time. Here's what filled our bellies:

Queso de Cubana del Horno

Baked goat cheese with a side of garlic bread ($5.95).

It's delicious and one of our BARcelona standbys. The basket of warm, buttery garlic bread fills you up, but the best part is the rich spreadable cheese on a bed of fiery tomato sauce. It's more than marinara, but safe even if you're sensitive to spicy food.

Alcachofas Fritas

Fried artichokes with a nutty, garlicky red sauce ($5.95).

These tasty artichoke poppers will forever replace mozzarella sticks in our hearts. Have you ever had a boy say, "Oh, baby, a handful is plenty!"? At BARcelona, he'd be wrong. We could have stuffed all four of our pockets with the poppers and still had enough for leftovers.

Empanadas de Espinaca y Champinon

Spinach mushroom pastry with cumin-garlic sauce ($5.75).

These baseball-sized nuggets ended up being more filling than their size led us to believe, and come with our favorite BARcelona sauce. You could spread this dip on a chalkboard eraser and it would still taste good. The spinach-heavy balls are fried and stuffed, like Santa on Dec. 26, with veggies and seasoning.

Too bad they don't have live music there anymore. I enjoyed the groups they had this summer.

I've been wanting to try this place forever!! The only thing holding me back was wondering about their meat-free options and this stuff looks great! Thanks for doing a completely veg review, I can't wait to try this place!!

O-M-G. New vocab has reached the masses. Awesome. Challenge: Use "twomp" casually in a sentence today.
