Tuesday September 30th: Sybris / Turnbull AC's / The Coke Dares @ Birdys
"Chicago's Sybris is a quartet of powerful grace, the sound of a battalion of Valkyries astride winged horses bound for Valhalla. Propelled by singer Angela Mullenhour's sugar-coated knife-edge voice, a unique entity in itself, brimming with shattering potential and weighted with its own world-weariness; elegant, bruised, but never defeated." At least, that's what the product description says for Sybris' new album on Amazon.com...
Sybris will be returning to grace Indianapolis with a performance at Birdy's Bar and Grill on September 30th, this time with The Turnbull AC's and everybody's favorite band from Bloomington, The Coke Dares!
Interestingly enough, Sybris are touring with the one and only Turnbull AC's, formerly a band called Scraper. Scraper was a band hailing from the West Midlands of the United Kingdom, specializing in 100 Mph Hardcore punk. Influenced by a variety of Punk rock and Hardcore punk bands, Scraper were likened to Snuff, Leatherface, China Drum, Hüsker Dü and even Fast Eddie period Motörhead. Scraper became popular throughout the latter half of the 1990s with strong followings around Birmingham, London and Cardiff. Towards the end of the 90's Scraper renamed themselves "Turnbull ACs". Scraper's 1996 album "Built with Hate" received 4 and a half out of 5 in Terroriser Magazine and 4 out of 5 in Kerrang!.
If you haven't yet seen the Coke Dares live, well make like a computer and get with the program, seriously. They are the fastest, funniest, most rockin' thing to happen to roll in like, two weeks.
See you at Birdy's.
Nice review of the headliner... any real opinions? Also, good job not even showing up.
By the way, your information is completely inaccurate regarding the Turnbull AC's, who were incredible. The band that actually performed would have been between 10-12 in 1996, they are from Cincinnati, and their only album to date was self-released in 2006. A simple search on myspace or google would have revealed this...
How is a review like this supposed to draw anybody out to see independent music to Indianapolis? All 3 bands were incredible by the way, its just interesting that you so clearly prefer the openers. Anyone reading this review would be wise to look up the bands themselves, make up your own minds, and avoid further pretension. This is an insult to any interested party's intelligence.
It is also surprising that you are in the business, given the complete lack of attention and information you contributed to this review. I've wondered why Indy doesn't draw more indie anything, and I hope this doesn't just become part of the problem. As a "concert promoter", although perhaps not for this particular concert, you did a poor job. If I was a band reading this, I would not come knocking on Indy's door. Lose the attitude, and let some dedicated, hard working bands have a chance.
Thanks.
