Collage and rock music have collaborated with varying success for years—-from The Beatles LP cover for “Revolver” and the poster for the White Album—Sly Stone’s “There’s a Riot Goin’ On”—The Faces album “A Nod is As Good As a Wink to a Blind Horse” album included a giant unfolding poster showing every moment of debauchery on their early 70s tours and groupie close ups, Aerosmith “Rocks” inner LP sleeve. Over the years Guided by Voices’ Robert Pollard, (unofficially the world’s most prolific rock songwriter) has taken this art to several other levels. His collage artwork is vividly illustrated in Fantagraphics new title, “Town of Mirrors”, a hardcover coffeetable art book of Pollard’s collages. Although Pollard has never publically admitted to being influenced by dada, Max Ernst, Robert Rauschenberg , or surrealism one could claim, as author Rick Moody does in his introduction, that there are some lofty influences to Pollard’s artwork. I prefer to see the origin of these collages in a fourth grade classroom in Dayton Ohio—well stocked with back issues of National Geographic—- where Pollard taught science during the day and made lowfi rock records at night in his basement.
