Former Greenfield-Central High School pitcher and major league prospect Kyle Gibson confirmed this morning he has a broken bone in his right forearm, but disputed media reports that it was a precursor to more serious elbow surgery.

Gibson said the injury will keep him from throwing until mid-July, but that he didn’t plan to throw much before that because he likely would not have signed with the team that selected him in Tuesday’s major league draft by then.

Gibson said he knew some scouts were concerned when his fastball was only clocked in the mid-80 mph range late this spring, when he was pitching for the University of Missouri. He voluntarily underwent an MRI and shared the results with all the major league organizations, he said."All the teams know about it,‘’ he said. "People who didn’t like me before are going to use it as a negative and not draft me. People who liked me before will say his elbow is fine, his shoulder is fine and and his arm will be fine in about five weeks.‘’Gibson said he understands he might slip a bit in the draft, but still expects to go in the first round. He is ranked by some analysts as the No. 4 prospect nationally."Most teams don’t expect me to help them out until August or September at the earliest,‘’ he said. "Everyone knew I had a long (college) season and that I was going to take some time off.’’
