Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between the Indy.com staff and Indianapolismusic.net.

1. The Kooks with Autovaughn
8 p.m., Dec. 11, $15, The Vogue, (317) 259-7029.

The Kooks are the latest new faces to appear in the ongoing British Invasion of pop music. The power pop quartet derives from such earlier Brit bands as the Kinks and the Jam. Just one album into their career, they've already placed six singles on the British charts and two in the U.S. This show is sponsored by radio station WTTS-FM (92.3) and benefits children's reading programs through the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library. Autovaughn opens.

2. R Kelly with Keyshia Cole
7:30 p.m., Dec. 8, $49.50-$79.50, Conseco Fieldhouse, (317) 239-5151.

R. Kelly brings his "Double Up Tour" to Indy this weekend to close out what's been a busy year for the R&B icon. In May he released "Double Up," an album that went No. 1, and placed three singles on the R&B charts. It's rumored that he plans to have another new record out in 2008. Kelly also 8released 10 new "chapters" in his hip-hopera video series "Trapped in the Closet."

3. Battle of Birdy's Final
8:30 p.m., Dec. 8, $10, Birdy's, (317) 254-8971.

The six-month odyssey that is the IndyMusicScene.com Battle of Birdy's kicked off in May with 105 bands signed up for a chance to be crowned the winner (which comes with some big prizes). On Saturday, the final six bands perform to find out who will come out victorious. Expect a huge crowd of fans, friends, family and other well-wishers out to support Win With Willard, Beta Male, 8Jacob Myrian, the Last Good Year, Mardelay and Thrive.

4. Silverchair with As Tall As Lions
8:30 p.m., Dec. 11, $22, Music Mill, (317) 841-1850.

At age 15, most would-be rock stars are still dreaming of the day when they will play in front of thousands. The guys in Silverchair got to live out the dream at that age. Their first record, which came out when all of the members were 15, made them worldwide rock stars. Now all grown up, the group has become one of the most successful rock acts in their native Australia. The group is touring in support of 2007 album "Young Modern."

5. The Redwalls, Jonathan Rice, The Whigs
9 p.m., Dec. 7, $10, Radio Radio, (317) 955-0995.

Radio Radio will provide an intimate setting for a trio of bands who have performed on bigger stages in Indy. The Redwalls, the Chicago-based band of British rock worshippers, opened for Oasis on that group's last Indy visit. The Whigs have made frequent trips to Indianapolis based on their previous reputation as one of the best unsigned bands in the U.S. (they're now on ATO Records). Jonathan Rice rounds out the night with his stomping, Neil Young-styled sound.

6. Punk Rock Night
9 p.m., Dec. 8, $7, Melody Inn, (317) 923-4707.

The boundaries of punk are pushed at Punk Rock Night with bands that dare the crowd to dance. The Sump Pumps bring their synthesizer fueled and New Wave-influenced sound up from Bloomington. Fellow Bloomington residents Prizzy Prizzy Please meld punk with elements of funk and R&B. Indy-based State is a former "Best Band" winner at the annual Punk Rock Night awards. The Sass Dragons cross over from Illinois with the closest true punk sound of the night.

7. Over the Rhine
8:30 p.m., Dec. 12, $16 advance, $18 day of show, Music Mill, (317) 841-1850.

It's quite an honor to find your name mentioned on a list of the 100 Best Living Songwriters. That's exactly where Over the Rhine's Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist found themselves in a 2006 issue of Paste magazine. The married duo was ranked a few spots below Sting and Merle Haggard, but a few spots above the members of Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac. The duo shows off its songwriting craft Wednesday at the Music Mill.

8. The Philosophy, Sarah Grain, Jascha
9:30 p.m., Dec. 7, free (donations accepted), Big Car Gallery.

Big Car Gallery's monthly First Friday event delivers a night of music, art and drink. The works of a quartet of "outsider artists" will be on display in a show titled "Under the Weather." Contributors to the Hoosier Beer Geeks blog will be on hand with a sampling of winter beers. The Philosophy, along with Sarah Grain, Joseph Lehner, Audio Reconnaissance, Jascha and People Vs. Radio, perform.

9. Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus
4 p.m., Dec. 9, sold out, Conseco Fieldhouse, (317) 239-5151.

2007's biggest music controversy wasn't due to obscene lyrics or an artist fighting legal problems. It was the outrage expressed by parents in pursuit of the hot-selling tickets to the concert tour featuring Disney Channel's Hannah Montana and her real-life alter ego Miley Cyrus. Aftermarket prices for tickets raced into the thousands. This Indy show is no exception. A visit to an online broker site reveals prices ranging from $151 to more than $1,500 per ticket.

10. Brenda Lee
3 p.m., Dec. 9, $30-35, Warren Performing Arts Center, (317) 532-6280.

Brenda Lee, the performer dubbed "Little Miss Dynamite," visits the Warren Performing Arts Center on Sunday. You can always count on hearing Lee on the radio during the holiday season. Her single "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" became a Christmas classic when it was released in 1960. That song, along with the dozens of other hits she scored in her career, helped land her in the Rock and Roll, Country Music and Rockabilly halls of fame.

It's truly a sad, sad week in Indianapolis music when Hannah Montana even makes a blip on the radar, let alone Indy.com's "Best Bets". I'd sooner put my money on some no-name kids banging out songs in their basement.

I'm with you. I think some of the voters gravitate toward concerts they think will appeal to a wider audience, even if it doesn't appeal to them personally. I tend to vote for what I would rather attend -- which means nobody can blame me for Ms. Montana's presence on this list.

How about some input from Dodge. He's always got some good insights. http://www.indy.com/people/Dodge You out there? Something better going on Dec. 9 besides a (gulp) sold out Hannah Montana show?

There are better shows going on with guys who jam in their basements and put their hearts and souls into making good live original music. I'm talking about a band called THRIVE at the Battle of the Bands at Birdy's (71st & Keystone). Come watch 6 all original live bands battle it out for a $10,000 Grand Prize. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Oh, and remember VOTE THRIVE!!!

Having written this list for nearly four years now, I can attest that the big arena shows are pretty much a damned if you do/damned if you don't proposition. You put 'em on, some folks gripe because these shows get plenty of publicity and probably don't need any additional attention. You leave 'em off, a whole different people grouse and call us music snobs for overlooking shows that attract a lot of attention.

As far as Hannah Montana goes, I didn't mind seeing it make the list simply because the tour has been such a source of controversy and media scrutiny, I'd have felt like the list was kind of incomplete without noting the Indy stop for the tour. But, I'm just one voter of 11 - the majority of our panel who submitted lists this week actually included it.

Actually, I rather liked this list. Lots of variety. Oldies act. Controversial kids act. Multi-discipline art gallery event. Big battle of the bands final. Superstar arena show. 2-3 good old fashioned club shows. Eight venues. Three all-ages events. Local acts. Not bad for the holidays. So if the mere presence of Miley Cyrus in our fair city drives you up a wall, there are 9 other shows that are 100% Hannah Montana free. Go to IndianapolisMusic.net and listen to our weekly podcast to hear the listing of shows that got votes but not enough to make Top 10.

How about a Top 10 Live for local bands/artists, and one for national acts? Twice as much work, twice as much fun!

@ IMN_Steve...I'm not dogging the panel's choices so much as mourning the lack of selection that Indianapolis brings in for the panel to choose from. I just wish there were more good shows that would compel you to bump Hannah Montana off the list. I'm also mourning the fact that so many parents are supporting and perpetuating the next generation of sheeple who look to commercial radio to tell them what good music is.

The other reason I took issue with it making the list lies in the title of the list itself. "Best Concerts" to me implies that you're getting the best bang for your buck. With tickets going for $150 to $1,500 (I realize that's the scalper price...but still), this is clearly not the case. $1,500 to watch Billy Ray Cyrus' kid lip sync? Seriously!? It also implies that the concert is relevant to InTake and Indy.com's reader demographic (which I would imagine bottom's out at 18+). Is anyone 18+ REALLY going to be interested in Hannah Montana? I'd be willing to wager that most of the parents who got roped in to taking their kids are actually dreading it. I guess I've always thought of Indy's alternative papers as leaning away from mainstream (InTake slightly less than NUVO), so I guess I expect and appreciate a little music snobbery. But with the appearance of more mainstream/popular acts on the list, perhaps a title like "Hot Ticket" would be more applicable. But this is just a personal opinion/rant, so feel free to take it with a grain of salt.

Like I said, I've been writing this thing for several years, so it's kind of nice to have a forum to explain (commiserate) the madness behind this thing. So no worries. FWIW:

We've never given the voters any guidelines. As Matt said, some lean toward big events, some focus on smaller events. I think that typically leads to a good mix.

We're not writing for any demographic. Indianapolismusic.net contributes the content every week with no particular concern about the target audience of INtake/indy.com. So you get some kid-friendly and older artist shows mixed in with more hipsteresque fare.

Pickings get slim in the winter in general. I know from Thanksgiving 'til Spring there are weeks we ask ourselves "are there 10 shows even worth talking about?" sometimes.

I'd rather see this list get people up in arms and second guessing us than have no reply. If having Hannah Montana on the list means a few more people read about Big Car's First Friday show or the Battle of Birdy's final, then that's a good thing. These silver linings keep me out of therapy. : )
