The Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between Indy.com and Indianapolismusic.net
1. Born Again Floozies CD Release Party
9 p.m. Sept. 5, $7, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect. St. (317) 955-0995.
The guitar/tuba/trombone/tap dancer combo brings one of the more intriguing lineups to stage every time they perform, offering a fun and entertaining update to the days of vaudeville. The band celebrates the release of its latest CD, "Street Music," with this show. Producer Steve Albini recorded and mixed the album.
2. Journey with Heart & Cheap Trick
7 p.m. Sept. 10, $20-$124.50, Verizon Wireless Music Center, 12880 E. 146th St., Noblesville, (317) 776-8181
It's been a long time since Journey, Heart or Cheap Trick has landed a single on the U.S. pop charts, yet the bands live on, thanks to classic rock radio and a regular rotation on TV and movie soundtracks. Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." earned a spot in pop culture history as it helped close down the TV series "The Sopranos." Expect to hear the greatest hits of all three bands.
3. Chicago Afrobeat Project
8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Sept. 5, $12, Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., (317) 253-4900.
Afrobeat combines the percussion-driven music of Africa with jazz, improv and funk to create a dynamic, restless sound. With a lineup that ranges from nine musicians to 13 members, including dancers and percussionists, this show promises to be a spectacle worth seeing.
4. Bridging the Gap featuring Mudkids, Twilight Sentinels, Grampall Jookabox
9 p.m. Sept. 6, Spin Nightclub, 6308 Guilford Ave., (317) 257-0000.
Most Indy shows find similar bands performing together. This show breaks that trend by placing two of Indy's leading hip-hop acts on the same bill with a respected experimental folk act.
5. CAST!/Coryell, Auger, Sample Trio
9 and 11 p.m. Sept. 10, $15, Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N College Ave., (317) 253-4900.
Can musical talent be passed from generation to generation? This show makes a case for the theory. CAST! features a trio of sons of legendary jazz musicians. Julian Coryell, son of Larry Coryell, handles guitar duties. Karma Auger, son of keyboardist Brian Auger, drums. Nicklas Sample, son of pianist Joe Sample, plays bass. The group self-released its debut album earlier this year.
6. Benevento Russo Duo w/ Everthus the Deadbeats
9 p.m. Sept. 4, $14, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., (317) 259-7029
The jazz-rock duo -- with Benevento's heavily affected organ sound, augmented by electronics of his own design -- has found a dedicated audience in the jam band community. They're joined by local pop experimentalists Everthus the Deadbeats for a night of music that flirts with the fringes.
7. The Derek Trucks Band w/ Greyhounds
8 p.m. Sept. 8, $27.50, The Vogue, 6259 N. College Ave., (317) 259-7029.
Super-guitarist Trucks is the nephew of Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks. He joined his uncle's band in 1999 and has been one of the Allman's guitarists ever since. Trucks also shows off his slide blues style of guitar playing in his own Derek Trucks Band, a group he founded as a 12-year-old prodigy.
8. People vs. Radio, System & Station, Bella Fea
8 p.m. Sept. 4, $6, Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St., (317) 923-4707
People vs. Radio bring the passion of both punk rock and hip-hop as it uses its music to comment on personal and social conflicts. The group headlines a show that features Portland's System & Station and North Carolina's Bella Fea.
9. Marmoset, Rooms, The Abner Trio, The Damwell Betters
9 p.m. Sept. 5, $7, Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St., (317) 923-4707
An indie rock extravaganza hits the Melody Inn on Friday. Marmoset earned acclaim with albums released on Bloomington-based Secretly Canadian Records. The group is due to deliver its latest release, "Record In Red" on Indy's Joyful Noise label later this month. Marmoset will be joined by Abner Trio, along with Rooms and The Damwell Betters.
10. Cocoanut Grove Lounge Night feat. Tonos Triad
8 p.m. Sept. 7, $5, Melody Inn, 3826 N. Illinois St., (317) 923-4707
The first Sunday of every month, the Melody Inn transforms from a rock 'n' roll bar into a groovy cocktail lounge. This week, Cocoanut Grove Lounge Night features the Tonos Triad. The trio incorporates upright bass, classical guitar, accordion, makeshift drums and other unusual instruments into its jazzy acoustic sound.
