Top 10 Live: The week's best concerts
The Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between Indy.com and Indianapolismusic.net
1. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers w/ Steve Winwood
7:30 p.m. July 3, $29-$94.50, Verizon Wireless Music Center, 12800 E. 146th St., Noblesville, (317) 776-8181.
Quintessential American rock-'n'-roll band Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers visits on the eve of the most American of holidays. The 50-plus hit singles in their catalog are among some of the most recognized tracks on rock radio, making concerts fall easily into extended sing-alongs with the audience. Fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steve Winwood, inducted for his work with the band Traffic, handles opening duties.
2. Sloppy Seconds CD release show w/ the Hollywood Blondes, the Villains and Up! Scumbag
7 p.m. July 5, $10, Emerson Theater, 4634 E 10th St., (317) 357-0239.
Add Sloppy Seconds to the list of Indy's top exports to the punk rock world. The group has earned an international rep with its punk-rock tales of booze, porn and pop culture. After a long layoff from playing live, the hometown heroes return to celebrate the release of their first full-length album in a decade, "Endless Bummer."
3. Mpozi Memorial Bash
10 p.m. July 4, $7, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect. St., (317) 955-0995.
Mpozi Mshale Tolbert left his mark on Indy's music scene in numerous ways. As a photographer for The Indianapolis Star, Mpozi was a regular fixture at large and small shows alike. As a DJ, he could be found spinning records in Indy's clubs. This year marks two years since his sudden death. Mpozi's friends gather on July 4 to honor his memory. Read more about this event here
4. 'Weird Al' Yankovic
8 p.m. July 3, $29.50-$47.50, WhiteLies Lawn at White River State Park, 801 W. Washington St., www.in.gov/whiteriver/lawn
Weird Al has been creating parodies of hit songs for more than three decades -- outlasting many of the artists he's parodied. Whether you've been a Weird Al fan since "My Bologna" or joined the fan club for his 2006 hit "White & Nerdy," this show should deliver the laughs and accordion pyrotechnics that Weird Al is known for.
5.Unknown Hinson w/ Mandy Marie & The Cool Hand Lukes
8 p.m. July 3, $12, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect. St., (317) 955-0995.
Old-school rockabilly is cool. Vampires are cool. Putting them together should produce twice the cool. That's what you get with Unknown Hinson. The character, created by Stuart Daniel Baker, is a hell-raising, ex-con rockabilly who just might also be a 400-year-old vampire. Baker also lends his voice to the "Early Cuyler" character on Adult Swim's "Squidbillies."
6. America Owns the Moon, the Nancy School, the Funky Circus Fleas, and Phoenix on the Faultline
10 p.m. July 4, $6, Melody Inn, 3826 N Illinois St., (317) 923-4707.
After the smoke clears from the Fourth of July fireworks, the Melody Inn hopes to lure you in with a pair of local band reunions. Indy neo-prog rockers the Nancy School get back together for the first time in a couple of years. America Owns the Moon, a band with numerous reunion shows under its members' belts, shares in the festivities.
7. John Mayer w/ Colbie Caillat and Brett Dennen
7:30 p.m. July 4, $29-$53, Verizon Wireless Music Center, 12800 E. 146th St., Noblesville, (317) 776-8181.
Singer/songwriter/guitarist, part-time comedian, and serial celebrity dater John Mayer returns to Central Indiana as part of his 2008 summer tour. With no new albums to his credit since 2006's "Continuum," expect this show to be a retrospective of all of Mayer's big hits. There's no word on whether current girlfriend Jennifer Aniston is on the tour with him.
8. Midwest Blues Festival
6 p.m. July 6, $47.50-$55, Murat Theatre, 502 N. New Jersey St., (317) 615-1500.
You don't have to worry about rain or heat ruining your fun at the Midwest Blues Festival. Unlike most summer music festivals, this one is being held indoors. You can close the Independence Day weekend with blues legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bobby "Blue" Bland, along with Millie Jackson, Sir Charles and Latimore.
9. Lawrence Fourth Fest
7 p.m. July 3-July 5 (concerts), free, Lawrence Community Park, 5301 N. Franklin Road.
Music plays a big part in the annual Fourth Fest held in the community of Lawrence. The event kicks off Wednesday and finishes Sunday, with live country music Thursday through Saturday. Stephen Cochran performs Thursday, Flynnville Train handles the Friday slot and the Kentucky Headhunters headline on Saturday. The Indianapolis Symphonic Band will also perform on the Fourth.
10. Will Hoge w/ Me and Sparky
7 p.m. July 5, The Rathskeller, 401 E. Michigan St., (317) 636-0396.
Revelers will pack Downtown Indy on the Fourth of July. Big crowds might also be on hand the following night as Nashville rocker Will Hoge makes his first visit to the Rathskeller. Hoge, a somewhat-frequent visitor to Indy's other music venues, will rock the outdoor Biergarten with a heartland sound that's been compared to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.
