Music festivals in the Broad Ripple cultural district have come and gone, with yesteryear's Rock the Ripple and Midwest Music Summit ranking among the most celebrated.

Now, the multi-act, multi-venue Broad Ripple Music Festival is slated for Oct. 25.

It's a sequel to the Broad Ripple Fall Music Festival, which was organized in 2007 after the Midwest Music Summit and the Broad Ripple Street Fair flamed out in 2006.

Broad Ripple Music Festival co-founder P.J. Christie doesn't dwell on event names, but he says it's important to have an annual celebration of the local music community.

"The quality of bands is as high as it's ever been," says Christie, who's played in groups ranging from Sardina to the Vulgar Boatmen.

"I don't see a particular peak or low point at any time in the 20 years that I've been following music in Indiana."

Dozens of acts will perform at 15 venues, with each venue raising funds for a specific nonprofit organization.

WITT Community Radio will be cause of choice, for instance, at Connor's Pub, 6331 Ferguson St., where buzz bands Marmoset, Everything, Now! and the Delicious are on the bill.

Second Helpings will benefit at the Central Space, 6151 Central Ave., where bands such as State and Amo Joy will play on a program open to all ages.

Christie says he and festival co-founder Jeb Banner emphasized a decentralized approach for the event.

"Each venue gets to do exactly what they want to do," Christie says.

Christie and Banner are executives at Small Box Web Design, a company that oversees music-focused online communities Musicalfamilytree.net and Broadripplebuzz.com.

A kick-off party for the Broad Ripple Music Festival is Oct. 24, at the Vogue.

Everthus the Deadbeats, the Born Again Floozies and other acts will play the movie-theater-turned-nightclub that's most closely identified with concerts in the area.

"Really, you can't do a Broad Ripple music festival without the Vogue," says Christie, noting that a scheduling conflict prevented the Vogue from being part of last year's event.

Spin Nightclub also has a high-profile history, thanks to the Patio, which presented shows at the 6308 N. Guilford Ave. address from 1975 to 2005. The Mudkids are booked for Spin's headlining time slot on Oct. 25.

Christie also encourages festival attendees to venture beyond the obvious sites and sounds.

"If you're only going to see bands at Spin or the Vogue, you're missing out on a lot of good venues and a lot of good bands," he says.
