The Master Cleanse: Day Four
I’m looking for reasons to quit.
Every time I tell someone about this diet, they twist their head sideways and say, “Um, I don’t think that can be good for you.” And I’m starting to agree.
I had headaches the first two days, probably because I had given up caffeine. But now I’m getting some acid reflux. I’m also feeling weak, though not shaky. It stands to reason: I’ve denied my body any food for 80+ hours now.
People have been asking me about the recipe, and I’ll be honest I haven’t done much research, but what I have done reveals this:
Nearly all of the solution consists of water, which is essential for life, but is of no nutritional value. The maple syrup is the sole source of calories, and they come from the sugar. So why maple syrup? One online doctor’s opinion: “No reason except to make it sound esoteric and magical. As far as your body is concerned, sugar is sugar.”
Then there’s the lemon juice and cayenne pepper. What makes them so important? Again, the doctor weighed in: “Does lemon have any magical properties that might help “detoxify” the body or otherwise aid in weight loss? Absolutely not! Last is the cayenne pepper. The only possible effect of this substance is to irritate the lining of the GI tract and to potentially cause diarrhea.”
Potentially? That’s all this diet is!
Honestly, I’m about ready to crack. My mind is jangled. I can’t handle any bit of last-minute work thrown my way. I’m having slight rage issues, and even snapped at my wife last night over nothing. I’m inundated with food commercials, none of which I can eat. To make matters worse, I’ve become so sickened by the god-awful flavor of the cleanse diet that I haven’t even drank any in past day. It makes me want to wretch just smelling the vile liquid. So now I’m basically fasting, drinking nothing but water.
I know, I sound like I’m at the end of my rope, and I am. I’m gonna have to give up. By the time you read my next post, on Friday morning, I have no doubt I will have quit.

There is a lot of info about this diet on the following page:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Master-C...
The article mostly calls it dangerous and a bad idea, but there are several who praise the diet in the comments. One guy even said he’s been on it for 30 days straight.
Those who praise it tend to say that for the first few days they feel like crap but then start to feel great.
After stopping the diet it seems that it is common to experience bloating, constipation, and/or acid reflux. If you start eating again with salads or light foods its supposed to help avoid that.
