ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Police say the swiping of a champion rabbit from its cage at a central Indiana fairgrounds landed a teenager in jail.

A police officer started searching the Madison County 4-H Fairgrounds near Alexandria after the reserve champion mini-lop rabbit was reported stolen Sunday night. The officer found an 18-year-old man petting the rabbit in a neighboring cemetery.

The officer reported the teen claimed he believed he was allowed to take the rabbit from its cage and play with it since he’d seen other people taking animals out of cages.
The teen was jailed on a misdemeanor conversion charge.
