Sushi Newbie
I tried sushi once and it wasn’t pretty. I’m willing to try again. Maybe I ate the wrong thing. I have no idea what it was. Maybe I was at the wrong place. Can anyone suggest a good first sushi experience? Where should I go and what should I order and how should I eat it?

I’ve never tried it but I want to, especially after reading the indy.com Sushi Guide. I think I’m going to follow the “Level 1” example and try California rolls or Futomaki. Why don’t you try it, too, and we’ll compare notes!

I’d stick to things that are cooked, like crab or shrimp. BethByChocolate’s right — can’t go wrong with a California roll, or a Philedelphia Roll. Both are entirely cooked and then you can move up from there!
also, a shrimp tempura roll is an easy way to start things off. the shrimp is lightly fried.

I started off my experience with grocery store sushi simply because it was small. If you get really good sushi, the rolls are large, can be difficult to eat, and if you have a bad experience with it you have a mouthful instead of a small bite! Definitely go for cooked stuff. The ones that are listed above are your best bets for sure!

I just had the pleasure of inducting a newbie into the sushi world. We went to Bistro Chopstix downtown, steering him toward the tried-and-true California roll, but he took a left turn and tried some yum-yum rolls (scallop, shrimp and crab). He did a decent job with the wasabi, too. I think we might just get him back for more.
I’m not a sushi expert myself, but there are lots of reviews for Japanese food restaurants that you can see on StretCred. If you go to www.indy.com/streetcred (or click on it in the menu up top) and search sushi or japanese in the box below the map, you’ll see lots of restaurants with sushi on the map and be able to tell which are close to you.
The numbers you’ll see on the map indicate how many reviews have been done for that restaurant or business. Just click on the number and then the name of the restaurant to see the reviews. Here are links to a few:

There’s also a listing of Japanese restaurants with lots more reviews here:

Hope this helps.
