Summer Festival mixes musical styles
Indiana University's annual Summer Music Festival has never been a strictly classical affair, but it's even less so these days, thanks to a broader mix of venues and musical styles -- jazz, for example, and pop.
The 2008 series opened last weekend, with the festival debut of Sweet Honey in the Rock, an a cappella African-American women's vocal group.
As a result, the festival has been drawing more people. Gwyn Richards, dean of the Jacobs School, said attendance has grown from 12,000 to 17,000 since 2005.
Presented through early August, the Bloomington-based festival mainly takes place indoors. Most events are in the Jacobs School of Music's side-by-side facilities on Jordan Avenue -- the Musical Arts Center (or MAC) and Auer Hall. There are also outdoor band concerts in front of the MAC, and a few off-campus events.
But since 2005, the festival has been featuring more name groups the faculty is associated with, and more jazz and pop music.
Upcoming programs will feature the Canadian Brass, guest conductors Robert Spano of the Atlanta Symphony and Xian Zhang of the New York Philharmonic, plus the final Bloomington concert by the Beaux Arts Trio.
Admission to most concerts is $10 to $25, though some are free. Here are details on selected events:
