DIY

These days, everything is customized, personalized or just labeled with your name. If it’s not readily identifiable as yours, it’s not worth owning.

When my darling boyfriend gave me an awesome iPod, I was ecstatic, but I also wanted it to look like it was mine. For protection, I bought a hard case at Target for $19.99. Then I saw easy instructions for iPod skins you make yourself on www.jannypie.com. Tonight, on a very special “Boy Meets World,” here are tips for making your own iPod skin:

What you need

- Clear, hard-shell iPod case that fits your iPod.

- Tracing paper.

- X-acto knife.

- Pretty paper of your choice.

To make it

Carefully trace your iPod through the tracing paper. Using the X-acto knife, cut out a template. Place the template on your paper and cut out your iPod size. Put the skin in your clear, hard-shell case, snap your iPod in and enjoy.

What are you wearing?

You’ve probably seen Scott Evans around town; since being named the face of MyNDY-TV, he’s been everywhere. Good thing he’s so adorably friendly, right?

Evans, 22, grew up in Indy after moving here from New York City when he was young. He credits his mom and aunt with helping him explore many avenues of style.

“I’ve really been able to experiment and try and find outlets for my look,” he says.

During the year and a half he lived in L.A., Evans found work at Express, prepping windows and working as a stylist for customers he met through the shop. Back home in Indy, Evans partnered with New York friends to create a line of custom clothing, D’Lorean.

He advises people, especially men, to “try things on. Guys don’t ever want to try things on. And look. Don’t have a closet full of the same thing.”

His style philosophy is simple: “It should amplify you.”

And with that, he admits, “When it comes to clothes, I’m pretty high-maintenance.”

Here’s what Evans is wearing:

- Earrings: Piercing Pagoda.

- Watch: Adidas, from Nordstrom.

- Plaid shirt: H&M.

- T-shirt: From Noblesville’s Revolver, Evan’s clothing sponsor.

- Jeans: Monarchy, from a shop in West Hollywood, Calif.

- Shoes: Creative Recreation, from Indy’s Got Sole?

My Little Pony Update

Attention! Attention! If you show up at the Indianapolis Art Center on Feb. 14, you will not find a My Little Pony Auction.

The auction has been postponed. However, keep your ponies coming — and to folks who have already submitted ponies, have no fear. Your ponies are safe with me, and the proceeds of the rescheduled auction will still go to the same cause. Watch this space for updates.

Magic three

1. For the first time ever, Miss Indiana was crowned Miss America. Surely a part of that victory is owed to Broad Ripple stylist Bobby Cooper, who worked with Katie Stam. If you want to drop off your congratulations or get the same ’do (or a similar one; after all, what are the odds of recreating genius?), stop by his shop at 725 E. 65th St. or call (317) 251-5000 for an appointment. Find more info at www.bobbycooper-salon.com

2. If your crafting skill level hovers at “intermediate,” “Crafty Chica’s Guide to Artful Sewing” is for you. By crafty chica Kathy Cano-Murillo, these low-sew projects make cool gifts for friends or for yourself. The book is available from Potter Craft, priced at $21.95.

3. True story: People kept asking me about the collages I make; I don’t make collages. Finally, someone tipped me in the right direction — the collage artist is Jenny Elkins and, once I saw her art, I knew that this was the kind of collage work I would want to do if I did make collages. Victorian women get cat ears, sepia-toned old ladies tell you to eat your greens, and cake is a hat for a blushing girl. Elkins’ work is available at Midland Arts & Antiques, 907 E. Michigan St., or online at www.jennyelkins.blogspot.com or www.jennyelkins.etsy.com
